OK. I've got a polite message from them saying I can either have a refund, download linux from their website, or return it to get a laptop with Linux back. Apparently, they charge £25 more for a laptop with a Windows XP license. I don't know what to do now! I really, really want one of these, but I ...

Ubuntu is great, for no other reason than IME it's one of the first distros that non-computer people get enthusiastic about the first time they use it. So many things work out of the box! Far easier to set up than Windows. Ubuntu one is brilliant, too. I think we ask too much from Linux sometimes. I...

Right, I've contacted the seller. I've said I would like some media with legal software that works with the computer. Perhaps they thought they were doing me a favour, giving me all this "free" software. It's a pity, we have some brilliant software out there in open source now, but this id...

A reply from Barry Kauler; I am honoured! 8) I'd be very interested to see what you come up with, Barry. I don't want to give this machine up, because on the face of it it ticks so many boxes! I live on a boat, so no reliable access to mains. A computer I can run with AA batteries is very useful ind...

I'm rather wishing I hadn't bought this now: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Power-Netbook-L9-/320478368124?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item4a9dffd17c Have (finally) got Puppy 4.3.1 to boot on it. No joy with wireless yet, or sound. It all worked when it arrived, but it had an unlicen...

How to automount a hd partition at boot?

What's the most elegant way to make sure a partition on my hard drive is mounted every time I start Puppy?

Stick with it! One of Puppy's brilliant features is its community (on lots of other Linux distros you'd be shot down in flames for starting this thread! Don't be afraid to ask questions here. When you are at your shell, type xorgwizard, then choose Xvesa. I would try 1024x768x24 and see if that goes...

My dad had a Westie. She was a much, much better killer than any cat, far more determined when she caught the scent of one. Has to be the right one, though. Lucky, the big, hard looking dog on the left is rubbish at catching small animals. Failing that, have you tried a catapult? Lots of people can ...

In skipstone, you type google: and your search string into the address bar, which does the same thing as selecting "Search google for" in the address bar of Seamonkey. Other defaults are yahoo: for Yahoo and fm: for FreshMeat, and you can choose others from clicking Settings>Preferences>Pr...

Without meaning to sound flippant or in the least bit unfriendly, I think you should partition your drive, do a frugal install, to it, then stop worrying. 8)
It will work great.

Yeah, it's also a live linux and I have to sudo passwd too. Doesn't DSL by default just leave the password for root blank? I've always liked it more than Firefox.
Although I have to admit, I like the cleanness of Skipstone, I've been using it since I bought the new CD from Barry.
Might try and make a puppy with Skipstone and nothing else, to see if it gets on my nerves. I use Seamonkey by default on this machine.

I took the hard drive out of a Compaq Armada 7400 the other day, so had to find this post again. It came out with two screws on the underside of the case. Once I'd undone this (they use a very weird star shaped screw head which I think may be Compaq-specific, but a flat blade screwdriver worked), it...
