Alright, so typing aplay -l on my puppy linux system gives the exact same chipset numbers as it does on my ubuntu system (which is checking the ALSA website confirms is correct for my hardware as well). The only difference is, ubuntu actually plays sound. I have turned the volume up using alsa-mixer...
