It uses a different mentality, sacrificing some size for appearance. It also has tweaks that the standard versions don't have. Which reminds me, is there a regular puppy theme for 215? Something comfortable, or w95/w98 like, as this CE comes with 4 (including an ick-XP) useless ones and one that is...

Of course it is possible to not have a HD slow down from use. With the sizes of today's huge harddrives, you could only use the fastest 10%. I don't think anybody is going to do that, but it is a possibility. Taking that suggestion to its extreme, you could use a HD only upto the size of its cache. ...

Sorry for the thread necromancy. Today I used puppy 2.12 for a little while on my Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro, it appeared to run fine. I did have to boot from CD, so I had to hold down control to force up the boot menu, and puppy doesn't recognize Mac's file system. Puppy had no problem using the bu...

Since tor is only 3 letters and can't be searched by the forum software, consider this thread tagged "onion" so it is easier to find.

Re: NSA helps build vista

I will never use Vista for anything, so I'm not awfully worried 8) I'd like to be able not to worry, but it is quite likely that both banks, my credit union, whoever my employer gives my 401k to today, my doctors, my insurance company, and any business which I have a 'loyalty card' with WILL be usi...

Reasons not to have a hosts file: 1. If you use it to speed-up known good sites, then when the site moves you can't find it, and remembering that it is hidden somewhere in your hosts file is normally something hard to remember. 2. Once you have a file, if someone else can add their own lines to your...

Not technically a bug, but can we remove a bunch of the animated smilies from the "post a reply" page so that my keyboard is responcive? The orange ones above in message icons or the horde of yellow smilies to the left, but please not both groups. Or maybe move them all to the bottom of th...

I'd love to have newer, faster free hand-me-down and cheap yard-sale computers and parts made 'obsolete' by Vista. Yes, but that is short-sighted; as Vista's DRM/'content delivery platform' will make it so Vista machines can't be handed down, and buying new won't be an option either. Since all driv...

Wikipedia uses mediawiki for its wiki engine. Considering the size on content, and the amount of control they need it is the right engine for them. Puppy's wiki OTOH has a lot less content, and it uses a wiki engine consistant with its own degin philosphy- small, quick, works. We can use categories ...

I'm looking at trying TOR (I've always just looked at information before, not actually tried it). I downloaded and installed the 2 dot-pups (privoxy & tor[non-beta]), and got them to start running in 213. However I hadn't followed the instrustions to config my browser (etc?) yet. So while it ins...

Thank you Sage, the "right amount of swap" is a hard question to find good answers to, Windows or Linux. I have (someplace) a couple articles that basically say "You have to determine the correct amount of swap space, since it depends on what you do with your system how much RAM etc.&...

I don't know which is the best (Puppy or not), but I tried the 2.0whatever that had Opera in it. Opera may have advanced to useable since then, or may not be so incompatible with Puppy now, but that release gave Opera a big black eye in my view. Dillo is awful in my experience. I have the strange fe...
