Issues and partial success with Nvidia GeForce Go 7600
Hi, Puppers! I have been banging my head against the wall for weeks trying to get fully functioning video on a Windows Vista era HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop with an nvidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card. Not one of the various proprietary Nvidia drivers for Linux has worked under any flavor of Linux, e...

Ok at a guess... 4.21 uses sfs3.... puppy 5 uses sfs 4... due to the workings of the kernel politics the two are not compatible. There is probably a converter around here ...or look out for sfs 3 packages / built for puppy 4 You can have sfs loaded on the fly too. Ok just for test and perhaps get y...

Mixing really old with really new does not always go well in Linux and even windows draws the line at some point. You might get lucky and build the drivers on a newer kernel but you do NOT need a newer kernel to run newer software. (see 214x...that might be of interest too) There's quite a bit of 4...

Re: The dreaded Yamaha opl3sa2 sound card
Well, lspci lists all kinds of stuff, including some sort of "Cube" (?? - not on that machine right now) DVD decoder hardware! But no mention of the sound card. Hi... Hmm. Well, it could be as Mike mentioned, an ISA device. If not that, then it could be that the chipset died or is not wor...

Re: The dreaded Yamaha opl3sa2 sound card
I've searched the web and these forums and have every reason to believe it's a Yamaha opl3sa2. Hi... Out of curiosity, what does lspci say? lspci -v Interesting, I found this statement here : Puppy Linux has the utility alsaconf which detects and configures this card correctly. I wonder if somethin...

Re: The dreaded Yamaha opl3sa2 sound card
I was wondering if it's possible to do this http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-opl3-sa2 under Precise; that is, to build and install the sound module? The module snd-opl3sa2 does not appear to be included in Precise 5.7.1 but it is included in Dpup Wheezy and Slacko 5.6 You co...

How to use Yamaha opl3sa2 sound card in Precise?
Hi, Pupples, I am trying to resurrect an ancient Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. Everything works fine and dandy except that even Alsaconf doesn't recognize the presence of a sound card. I've searched the web and these forums and have every reason to believe it's a Yamaha opl3sa2. There are even some ref...

Fatdog is quite brilliant
This is just a little love for the developers of Fatdog, which I had the occasion to try for the first time a couple of days ago. I have an ongoing, personal charity project in which I collect old, unused laptops from friends and neighbors and rehabilitate them. I put some form of linux on them. I t...

Video resolution on Gateway Solo 2500
Hi, I can get Lucid Puppy running okay on a Gateway Solo 2500 with a Celeron 400 mhz processor and 128 MB RAM. But with the newer official Puppy builds, I can't get the native 1024 x 768 resolution; they all seem to give me 800 x 600 with no GUI alternative for a higher resolution. The laptop has a ...

John, Well, I installed the libv4l library as instructed rebooted, and tried the LD_PRELOAD command line, but got this error: ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/lib4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored. I also tried installing wxcam from an Ubuntu deb file (the puppy installer s...

How to use Logitech USB webcam?
Hi, I am setting up Puppy 4.3.1 on a friend's ancient, underpowered laptop. (The brand is "Great Quality" (heh, heh) which used to be sold by Fry's. It's got 256 MB RAM and a 1.2 ghz VIA C3 processor. Well, guess what? Puppy runs on it like a jackrabbit, AND Puppy recognizes his USB D-Link...

Glad you managed to do it. Now for the desktop icons. Go to /opt/openoffice.org3/program and drag the sxxxx executables you want to the desktop. Right click on them one by one and select set icon Drag the corresponding icon from /usr/share/midi-icons to the opened panel for each of them. This worke...

SOLVED!!!
Do you know how to go to /usr/share/applications ? Yes! Thanks very much for your help. I edited the desktop files in Geany and specified the full path to each executable (/opt/openoffice.org3/program/sxxx) and rebooted, and now all those programs will launch from the Menu. Only thing I still can't...

In /usr/share/applications you have the different .desktop files for the soffice applications. In the sfs file symlinks are missing, but I don't know which ones. I solved this by editing each sxxx.desktop file and have the full path in the Exec= statement to the sxxx applications. Normally starts i...
