Chromebooks

Has anyone done a successful install of Puppy - any variant - on one of these? Picked up a refurbished one for about $130 recently - Google Chrome OS is nice in some respects but would prefer Puppy for daily use.

An IBM X-30 series would be good or an X-60. I would avoid the X-40 series because the hard drives for them can be hard to find. The X-20 series will also work. Precise Puppy and/or Retro Precise should run well on any of them though. Their big advantage is a near full size keyboard - some of the ne...

Need Puppy Precise compatible versions of...

I'm setting up a laptop for an older lady at our church with Retro Precise - it is an old IBM X21 - and she has asked if it would be possible to get her favorite Windows games - Solitaire (Spider and regular) and Hearts - checked the package manager repositories and found neither. Not into games mys...

After some thought went ahead and loaded Retro Precise Puppy on the EeePC. Everything works and my friend is a happy camper now that she has a reasonably secure way to do personal stuff on the road. Thanks Guys for your help and suggestions...

Mike - some good advice there - Murphy has long been an adversary of mine and having a backup is a good thing. Mike and Oscar - seriously considering going to Retro Precise Puppy for this project for the sake of compatibility with current software. FYI the little ASUS 701 EeePC was the machine that ...

Hi Oscar, Yes, Quik pet will install in most 5.x versions of Puppy that I've tried - mostly various versions of Wary that I have used - it's quite handy for finding some of the more popular pet pkgs in one place. This project is for a friend who spends much of her time on the road and needs somethin...

Missing libs when installing Firefox and Chrome

Working with an old ASUS EeePC 701 to get it set up as a Puppy machine for a friend to use on the road. Using Wary 5.5 which loads and runs OK - so far - and am trying to get Firefox and Chrome from the Quik Pet package installed and working. Missing the following libs - is there a link to an availa...

Wary Puppy requests

This has probably been suggested before - The best way to make Wary better would be to include Quick Pet and the Browser chooser with maybe only a light weight browser like Dillo or Netsurf built in. This would allow a smaller size download and give everyone the ability to choose their own favorite ...

Still working on and with the old Compaq - it is currently set up with Wary 5.2 installed on the hard drive with Vesa and is running so far without problems. Vintage Hardware...

I spend quite a bit of time working with and repairing old/vintage hardware to extend its useful life - I live in what is by definition "the poor side of town" and many of my neighbors can't afford new or even used high end hardware. Puppy in all of it's variants is a lifesaver at times. M...

Was given an old Compaq Presario Model 5242 by a friend awhile back and have been having a ball working with it - the goal is to have a system that will be usable for web browsing, email, etc. Given relatively low RAM 384 MB and the AMD K6-2 processor it is not compatible with most current Linux dis...

EarlyTV, Recommend that you download and try the 4.1.2 release - on my system which is quite similar in specifications to yours - after the network wizard and alsa config have been run LAN and sound work quite well - as a test on that board I've got 4.1.2 booted up in RAM and I'm browsing the net an...

If memory serves Barry put out a stripped down version of Puppy with no Xorg very early in the 2.0 series - the only X server was Xvesa. If you can find it - puppy-barebones-2.01r2 - it might be worth a shot to see if it works on your machine. It might be usable by itself with additions from the pac...

D945GCLF2 motherboard and Puppy 4.1.1RC

Good news - as with my last post - 4.1.1RC boots up OK - sound and network both are working out of the box and Gxine works for DVD playback. I'll be doing some more tests but have not come across any showstoppers yet. More another time.

Good new for Puppy users! 4.1.1RC boots up on this board with no problems - sound and network both work "out of the box" - I'm playing WMA format music files from an NTFS partition using Pmusic 0.3.3 while I'm writing this in Puppy with no problems so far. Have not tried running a DVD yet ...
