It isn't Grub that is the inode problem. Puppy uses legacy Grub by default. Gparted changed in the 4.21 series. Make the partitions with the 4.21 or later Gparted and it will work for any version. No modem (no dialtone), and my Logitech optical PS/2 mouse wouldn't work.

Tried Lucid Puppy-528.004 Live CD on Dell Latitude C840, and the optical PS/2 mouse didn't work. However the PS/2 keyboard did work.

I just tried Lucid Puppy-528.004 Live CD, and got same error as Puppy-421 - modem recognized, but no dialtone. Bummer. This is really strange that it would be recogninzed and initialized, but wouldn't dial. On top of that my PS/2 optical mouse wouldn't work. So I guess this release is not a good fit...
