4.2 installation GUI too big for low-res screen

Hi, I have installed Puppy 4.2 on a few different sets of hardware and run the live CD on several others. Today I installed it on a system where it booted into a higher resolution screen than on the others, which was a revelation. Clicking on the Install icon, on lower resolution systems (or systems...

The power of Grub4Dos is very impressive. agree totally Moreover, having specified the initial loader, it will search ALL attached devices including USB I think it only finds usb if BIOS knows about usb -- unless they have improved it without updating their user instructions, which when I last look...

Ive edited my main posting, steps 9 onwards slightly different. When I worked through my own instructions with the latest version at step 10 it automatically found the menu.lst file in the puppy partition. As Mike already said, it is an example of how easy/safe grub4dos is...worst that happens is no...

hi everyone - I thought I'd cross reference this thread to another that answers a similar question. If I had seen this thread I would not have prepared my answer, but in fact that would have been a pity because my method is slightly different and will work in some cases where this one won't. Equally...

hi again Simon, how would it be if I show you how to boot into the puppy live cd from XP. Then use my method to boot the puppy live cd, and use that boot up to install puppy onto the laptop? I have tried this with a desktop running win2k and a bootable dvd -- that is as near as I can get to your set...

Re: Cannot get GRUB to Start

I have tried in vain to install both frugal and full on a Fujitsu Lifebook 1-4190. ... hi yo.dave do you mean you can't get frugal to install and boot (on its own) plus you can't get full to install and boot on its own; or do you mean you are trying to dual boot and can't get it to go? If you are t...

To get what you want, you need both choices on the one menu. As others have rightly said, you need to run the Ubu grub, not the Puppy. Therefore, you need to know how to add the Puppy option to the Ubu menu. I suggest you proceed as follows - in puppy, look for the menu.1st (that a one, as in first)...

You may have inadvertantly written Grub to another location. ... This is easy to do, but I don't think it is what happened here. The message about uncompressing the kernel is either the last message from grub or the first from the kernel (I forget which) but either way the boot has proceeded past a...

I think star office is actually now sun's proprietry office suite, though why you'd pay for it when its almost identical as open office which is free i dont know. hi Bruce The instructions say among other things, to install Winzip and Winimage. This really seems odd to me because Linux is so much easier. Not so odd - the Linux Router Project assumes you are building your very first linux system to run a router - and have neither knowledge nor hardware to do t...

*I thought that a "full install" meant that the pup_420.sfs would be unpacked to the hard drive. So why does booting a full install still involve "uncompressing linux"? This is normal practice on all but the most ancient versions of linux. The boot loader loads vmlinuz - the z b...

hi woofwoof: Do you think that i should remove the swap partition to save the cf card? yes, and not only to save the card. cf is a lot slower than ram, especially on write, so even if u are made of money, using cf as a swap drive is not a good idea. Force the OS to work in the RAM you have, and it w...

hi Bruce, thanks for the reply. I'm sorry I wasn't clear about what I was asking. How to use legacy network cards?

I am starting to play with Puppy on a number of machines. Anyone got any tips on how to help puppy find legacy network cards? With any luck, the password is now stored in the router - and that would be why/how win & ubu can get in without knowing it. You say it is a wired router - do you connect your computer to it via ethernet cable or usb? If you look in the network setup from either win or ubu, you will most likely ...

hi Patriot, thanks for the reply. To make it a bit snappy, you'll need the Kqemu accelerator running before qemu-puppy. I'd recommend qemu 0.9.1 or the latest 0.10.2 I was looking at this, but I do not think that is possible on the target machine, which is a public access internet machine at my loca...
