snap2 compression

[Version 4.3+ is now (as-of April 16, 2010) classed STABLE/TESTED. Snap2 is wonderful. My other favorite backup program is storeBackup. Dependancies make it rather impractical for use in Puppy, but storeBackup does offer the option of by-file compression. I realize the implications of this but do y...

Odd Snap2 backup directory structure

Lloyd, I'm very new to Snap2 and find it fits my needs splendidly. Thanks for the time, effort and talent! Snap2 created it's first daily backup this morning. The results were as advertised save for one surprise - my recent.4 backup had been copied down into the daily.1 folder, as shown: # tree -L 1...

Yes, you'd need to create a backup set for every combination of partitions you would back up. I've run into a very significant issue when attempting to backup pup_save files using any rsync-based utility. The problem is that Puppy does not "touch" the pup_save while/after updating it. Bec...

Actually, I can suggest one other change. By installing FAH to a folder off /mnt/home, the user's pup_save file doesn't have to carry the weight of FAH work files. That's generally the way I install the client. FAH work files don't grow terribly large but the distinction may appeal to those wishing ...

Very nicely done Wolfpup. This should lower the bar considerably to new FAH participants. The only thing I can think to suggest now is the option of adding fah6 to the user's Startup folder.

Thanks a bunch!

@alienpup Gzip the backup. That'll squeeze the air out of it Yeah, deleting all of my code comments would knock a chunk out of it too :). Perhaps you misunderstood me. I refer to compressing the newly backed pup_save file, not your code. Pup_save's are "sparse" files whose free space is ...

What can I say 2byte, but simple, small, clean, wonderful. Puppy has needed just such a utility for a very long time. Really very well done.

One suggestion. Gzip the backup. That'll squeeze the air out of it ;-).

Thank you very much!

Yeah. About 50 kg lighter and younger than I'd imagined. But what the heck, I'm still using Slaxer despite Barry's latest and best. It "just works".

Thanks, Joe. Thanks very much.

Included apps and size

...The proposed solution (splitting out as many apps as reasonably possible into separate autoloading sfs) seems perfect to me. I really love the idea of a base pup_xxx.sfs that's ~50mb....Tom I think we have to be careful with this one. Puppy needs to appear to newbies (and reviewers) as "ful...
