When I try to open up Alsamixer the screen pops up for about .5 sec then disappears. Zmixer says no sound card was found. WTH???

Is there a way to figure out from my computer what kernel I have? I downloaded Puppy 4.3. I need to download a version of puppy using one of these kernels: 2.6.30.5 (preferably) or 2.6.25.16 or k2.6.21.7.
