*really* saving my wireless config

I have a Dell laptop. by default it detect the bcm43xx module, but it doesn't work with the Dell device. Instead i need to uninstall the bcm43xx module using modprobe -r bcm43xx, then I can use the networking wizard to use ndiswrapper with the Dell driver. Even though when everything is set right I ...

you porbably need to install the usb kernel module. can't remember what it's called offhand. .ko extension and usb in the name. :)
Look at how the usb drive is mounted in the wizrs or the mount script.

anyone has a precompiled version of ppmtolss16 handy? I've been playing with creating my own splash screens (I have been modifying using images I found on the Internet to test with, but releases of puppy need to use images that are free of copyrights). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v387/papascht...

NOOOOooooo! don't require perl just for that! (and this is coming from a perl advocate!) have you tried "netstat -a" it should list the ports that are in a listen state (TCP is in the first list at the top) you can grep/gawk/sed the output to death to get the info you need. what port are y...

Xfire chat client plugin for gaim

If any of you are gamers, you probably know about Xfire, which only runs on windows. Xfire fire is a chat client (like gaim, icq, ...) that integrates into most recent windows games so that you don't have to leave the game to chat. It also has other features such as allowing you to see what servers ...

there is a perl pupget. don;t know how it compares with the version of active-perl you've installed.
There may be a lot of trimming possible from a "standard" perl install to save on disk/memory space

gtkdiff works OK if you need a GUI with pretty (?) colors (under utilities in the menu)

I miss perl. I'm a perl freak and it's been hard to give it up on puppy but I have not yet found a good reason to use the megabytes for it. None of the puppy apps require and it, and for scripting we already have ash, gawk and sed, which can be coaxed into acting as replacements for simple perl scri...

Re: are NTFS partitions mounted read only?

don't know pup001 could be writable if /dev/hda1 is in read-only hadn't thought about that. don't know the answer either since I'm not sure how the mounting of pup001 occurs. Of course in my case pup001 is on /dev/sda1 so it wouldn't be an issue to lock the NTFS partition. only workaround is to hid...

does it work for non-root users? To tell the truth I don't know since you always run as root in Puppy. As long as the application can read and write to /root it should work. Then the answer is no. Or if the app has access to /root then it's a security risk (probably mean a user could see and erase ...

you should be able to do this from a one line script, no need for a specialized program.

anyone knows of something equivalent to boot oof the CD-ROM and transfer control to the USB drive? My main puppy (heavily customized 1.0.3 based liveCD) is on a USB "pen" drive. I ran into one laptop that couldn't boot from USB and didn't have a floppy drive: if I had a small ISO on the US...

are NTFS partitions mounted read only?

not at a puppy machine at the memoent so I can't check. Yesterday I attempted to unzip a wireless drivers .exe file and got all sorts of errors. At first I thought maybe it was becuase the exe wasn't a self extracting archice and that's why unzip was having trouble (even though it listed the content...

new "Choose HD" option

I saw the news for July 4 saying that puppy will have a "choose HD" option at boot. This is great! I was going to try and implement something like that myself because I wanted to be able to force choosing the USB drive even if a suitable hard-drive has been found.

look at the names next to each letter code and compare it to the first row of letters on your keyboard, it sounds like you want an "AZERTY" keybaord and you're set up for "QWERTY" (or vice versa).

FYI, on my main machine which has a DFI NF2 Ultra motherboard, I can't boot from flash even though it boots fine in other computers. All I get is a "no operating system found".

I agree with the previous poster though getting stuck at "LI" would seem to point to LILO
