Thanks guys for these network managers. I didn't think I was ever going to get the wifi on my HP laptop to work with Puppy. Network wizard could see my wireless router on a scan but when it tried to assign an IP address it would either come up with something completely eroneous or a message saying u...

Thanks for the tip. It wasn't in my menu for some reason (actually using NOP), but I found it under /usr/sbin. Would be nice if it had a separate tab for removable media so these could be treated differently to fixed drives but it gives me something to work with. Cheers Sorry, it was in menu under s...

Disable showing of hard drives on desktop

I'm running 4.31 off a usb stick and just wondered what's the easiest way to stop the hard drive icons (sda1) displaying on the desktop. My reason is I want to avoid an inexperienced linux user clicking on the icon and mounting the pc's hard drive. I would still like removable media to show up as th...

Hi Barry, forum access seem's a bit intermittent today. yenta_socket was loaded but the 0.0 directory you mention was not present, there is nothing under /sys/bus/pcmcia/devices/ My Xircom card is a little different to yours as it not a combo. If I run the command you gave on Muppy where it works I ...

I tried with my 2 pcmcia network cards: 1) DSE 10/100 Mbps PC Card (Realtek RTL-8139): not detected by script but works in Dingo after loading 8139too module. 2) Xircom credicard Ethernet IIps: not detected by script and still not working in Dingo after manually loading xirc2ps_cs. But automatically...

It's not exactly a light wieght app, (linux installer is 276 MB) so probably bigger than OO. Just thought I'd try it anyway but the installer fails due to mis-reporting available disk space, df -- P option not supported in Puppy's BusyBox.

Pmount continues to annoy me - how to eject a CD with it?! On my laptop the button on the cd drive gets disabled after putting a cd in so you can't push the button to retrieve the cd even if it's not yet mounted. If you do mount it then it will automatically eject after unmounting or I can eject it...

Sage, the cfdisk problem may be due to the new drive naming, if I call cfdisk on it's own it crashes but if I specify the drive it's OK: # cfdisk FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive Press any key to exit cfdisk # cfdisk /dev/sda cfdisk (util-linux 2.13-pre7) Disk Drive: /dev/sda Size: 40060403712 by...

Did frugal install to linux partition from universal installer and used the recommended text to edit my grub menu.lst, all worked as expected. There seems to be a gtk error with the pcdripper and pmetatagger apps: ** ERROR **: gtkdialog: Error in line 49, near token '<label>': syntax error aborting....

Seamonkey is ok from desktop and menu for me.

Love the xine-plugin in Seamonkey, streaming video running smoother on a low spec system than it did with gxine.

I finally got around to trying a frugal install and I'm an instant convert, just grabbbed the files out of the iso instead of burning a cd.

Thanks Flash,
your way is definitely best, the other way only works if they were already in order on the source, I must have got lucky with the first couple of directories I tried :-)

Hi Flash, I'll give your method a try but in the mean time I found a command line way of doing it using tar and the pipe symbol: cd /source/directory/ tar cpf - . | tar xvf - -C /path/to/dest/ It's quite fast copying this way too as it reads everything into memory in order then writes the files out ...

How to copy files by name order?

Just wonder if anyone knows of a program or script that will copy files sorted by alphabetical name order. For example if I have a directory of an audio book with a 100 or so mp3's they are all nicely ordered by name in Puppy but when I copy the folder onto my flash disk mp3 player it's a first in f...

Hi Barry, tested latest Dingo on old and new hardware: my old Toshiba laptop needed it's usual xorg tweaks (no surprise). Also it's sound module wasn't loaded so had to modprobe snd_es1968 but after that sound works. PCMCIA network card works (after loading 8139too driver, same as for previous Puppi...

I think it's mainly a matter of making a final choice on themes and browser / email client. If we include flash-9 I think around 90 Mb would be a realistic target. An extra themes package could be made available for those who want to change it. I installed the latest Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 with an outl...

Hi guys, I tested moving moving firefox to /usr/lib and deleting the seamonkey directory and re-linking /usr/lib/firefox to /usr/lib/mozilla (if firefox is really going to replace seamonkey in this release then we can save some space and apps that need the mozilla libs can use firefox's). The fix fo...

I was testing the new alpha but didn't realize the full effect of the green theme as I was using a pre-existing save file so I got quite a surprise after installing to a partition and rebooting. Anyway, well done guys it's a great start. Wonder if anyone is keen on updating the universal ...
