Thank you Karl Godt It is not cable problem. The legendary BX440 chipset on ASUS P2B-DS is limited to UDMA2 by it's design. Another limiting factors: old Puppy 4.3.1 (destroyed) full installation was on 3GB Seagate (max UDMA2), and frugal installations are on Caviar 8 GB (max UDMA4), limited to UDMA...

chopsuwe There are two main different questions: A. Non-destructable system for user that "killing all". B. Making XP so foolproof, as possible. "A" Not so hard, but a plenty of work to do. In short: it lead to build your own OS LiveCD based on distro like a Puppy. In general: it...

Isn't it a time to another approach? Suggestion in short: - wiping disk - 1st partition (say 4~8 GB) - bootable - for all "loved puppies" - ext3 - 2nd partition (1 GB) - Linux Swap - 3rd partition (8~12 GB) - reserved for another distro - ext3 - 4rd partition: extended - 5th partition: log...

Diary of misery part 2. 9. The story repeats ones more. Today I installed Lucid Puppy 5.1 in frugal mode, ext3 pup_save file. It's look fine, but seems to run no faster, than Lubuntu 10.04 I'm writing from. I installed numlockx, Wine (manually corrected fallen download of gecko...cab), Firefox 3.6....

What a surprise! When Dell shipped the computer to me, I could not boot it. I am sort of a computer expert so I realized that it was a bios problem, so I called tech support. They were quite friendly and told me that yes, it was a bios problem and that Dell had been having some problems lately. The...

w/booting older machines
Write more info, for example PII 233 / ram 64 MB etc etc.
5 & 5.1 DO NOT BOOT
What that means? Take F2 at first boot screen, you will have boot options. LP5 in auto-mode goes to desktop or to nowhere.

Hey HouseMouse Labeling partitions ... oops, I knew I forgot something I suppose, that you will not use disc(s) label(s) at now, but it will be helpful in near future. As for the file system, I went with ext2 to be on the safe side. ext2 is highly unsafe and predisposited to data lost under crash. G...

Puppy LiveCD (and almost all Linux distros) auto-mount all swap partitions found in PC. Swap partitions are locked and it is impossible to unmount any.
But..

Code: Select all

swapoff --help
give you options, how to disable swap(s). The rest will be easy.

HouseMouse A. If speed and safety only, than foolproof XFS file system, but very hard to recover data from fallen disk, and almost impossible to recover accidentally deleted files. B. Don't forget add labels to partition. C. Last but not least: move default data folders - like Puppy's "my-docu...
