BIOS Access

What is the hardware you are working on? Getting access to the BIOS is not controlled by the OS on the hard drive. Perhaps we can advise you of the the correct key combination to use. You should note that with some PCs they work so fast that getting into the BIOS is tricky and you have to repeatedly...

USB resurrection

I have gone down this route before and sometimes for expediency switched to doing the task with the HP USB formatter for speed. See: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/hp-usb-disk-storage-format-tool/ It runs in Windows (Sigh). However, I think it may run in DOS. It used to be the standard fo...

Wifi USB Sticks

I think that you can use almost any. Linux does have to recognise the "chips" inside the USB stick and have drivers for them. At one time it could be "hit and miss" bur these days you would be unlucky to buy one that does not work. You can pick up cheap ones that do the job. Some...

Image Burn

Always give Image Burn a go, which used to be the recommended burning software at one time. With old machines it was necessary to select the slowest burn rate to get a good CD or DVD. https://www.imgburn.com/

Chromebook EOL

enrique, when you say: "Be ware that at the end or close of life cycle Google will be sending an update that I bet you will prevent you to use it anymore. They done this with Android. Some manufactures lock the boot-loader so that you can not go back or install anything else than the last updat...

Amount of storage

entique At the moment, 2 GB of RAM and a 16 GB SSD is more than enough for Puppy. If you have a frugal install you can always move a downloaded video, iso, etc, away from the save file. I recommend that extra storage, because with many of the current Chromebooks, you are stuck with what it was made ...

Using the Internal Card

Googling the HP-530, I think that it has a Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 chip on the network card which is closed source? However, looking at a Slacko it appears that the firmware is in /lib/firmware as it has the b43 and the b43legacy directories. So it should work. USB wifi dongles can easily get d...

Linux on Chromebook

I have ended up with 3 older Chromebooks with Linux on them and a newer HP14 one which still gets updates that my wife uses. She like the Chromebook as do I because it does all she needs and it does much of what I like. I have two Acer C720's one with a John Lewis alteration so that it boots from MB...

Trying different BBC video

I wonder if a different BBC video can be played by franzjh such as https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z ... es/zskthyc.

And can BBC video be played by another Puppy such as Slacko or a relation such as Fatdog

Need for Flash

Just tried out in my Bionic64 without Flash and it works for me. Video plays well.

I did wonder if it plays for UK IIPs but not for others. iPlayer certainly will not let you play the content when away from the UK,. Bit unlikely for education content though.

Opportunities for Puppy and Fatdog

Just had a look at Distrowatch's Page Hit Rankings (21-1-20) and it is very noticeable that most Distros (including Puppy) have had received renewed interest. I guess that this is as a result of EOL for Windows 7. If anyone with Windows 7 wanted to experiment with Linux and potentially leave Windows...

Remote printing of Documents

Have never done this but would it be possible to scp copy of document to the Office and with a ssh command get it to print. Of course, at the Office you would need a PC always on with a printer attached and a firewall "hole" so that you can communicate from outside. And you can use ssh -X ...

Blacklist Module

bigpup

Stumbling around in the dark here, however, looking at your dmesg and lsmod, you have the Intel sound driver loaded. This may take preference to the max98090 and inhibit that from working. Try blacklisting "snd_hda_intel" or maybe you can use the Sound Wizard.

Sound

prell Agree that sound appears to be a big challenge. If the Ubuntu and other large Distros have problems then we have an uphill battle to do better than them. I am hoping that if bigpup solves it then that will give a pointer as to how to proceed with your Chromebook. I have ended up with 3 older C...

Sound

bigpup I pursued the idea of adding kernel support in the post on woof-ce here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=96723&start=570 . I had missed the fact that stemsee had already introduced a new DOTconfig for Baytrail laptops and that worked for him, although I am not certain whi...

Interesting read on cookies in PCLinuxOS magazine

Just read about cookies here: https://pclosmag.com/html/Issues/202001/page04.html and found it interesting and worrying. I guess that with Puppy with a frugal install we can create a new savefile every so often and that would get rid of them for a while. The trouble is that all web sites "infec...

ROM write protect screw

bigpup Sorry to hear about your problems with the screw. To work on laptops you do need a good set screwdrivers so that you can pick one that snuggly fits the screw head and if I remember on my HP 14 Chromebook the cross slots are narrow. On mine it was not stuck down and came out easily. Let us kno...

Hi Stemsee I cloned git to get at the kernel compile kit and missed that? I adjusted the DOTconfig that I did get from an existing Bionicpup64 and it did not have the modules enabled in it. Additions to DOTconfig

I don't know if this is the best place to request additions to the Puppy DOTconfig but I will and hopefully someone will point me in the right direction if I am wrong. kernels

Hi prell When you say, "I don't have too much experience with Linux" you are doing well to get as far as you have got. On a scale of 0 to 10, I am only at about the 3/4 level and only know a little. I most certainly do not want you to risk that Gallium install on the internal SSD. There is...
