mksquashfs and memory vs. image size
Hi jamesbond, Thank you for your feed back it is wonderful. I have another question. As a test I extracted the files from FD64.sfs and then created FD64new.sfs from those files. I found that the default command mksquashfs with the -comp xz option created a larger sfs file. I added nothing and change...

Thank you jamesbond, this gives me lots to think about. From what you have said, I am hearing that /tmp is entirely in RAM and able to be the source for an SFS file which will be added to the AUFS layers by the load_sfs.sh script, is that correct? Thanks, Rdog Additional pointers. I discovered that ...

Hi Zakjoh, No I managed it with Fatdog 64. If you are interested here is some details (ignore if not interested). I have been booting Fatdog from a USB key which I have installed grub2 to for a few years. Here is my /grub/grub.cfg: # Begin /grub/grub.cfg set default=0 set timeout=5 # ext2 covers ext...

Thank you DrDeaf. I figured out how to accomplish what I was looking for. Rdog So I guess there is no way to get all of it to load into memory. Hello Rdog. Although I am not one of the experts here, this thread from rcrsn51 should be helpful to you: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67235...

Rdog, You have to put the save file and sfs on hard drive. Then the usb will not get mounted at system start and is free to mount and unmount as you like. Thank you for that. So I guess there is no way to get all of it to load into memory. Here is what I am thinking. I would like to encrypt the har...

Loading FD64 710 into RAM
I would like to be able to boot Fatdog 64 into RAM from a USB key and then remove the USB key. I have tried using the options: savefile=ram:uuid:F960-5BA7:fd64save_dmcrypt_.ext4 and rootfstype=ramfs But the USB key used to boot remains mounted and when trying to un-mount I get the message: sdb1 is u...

Hi Amigo :)
Which LFS package management approach do you mean? The package management system has been dubbed: "More Control and Package Management using Package Users" and you can find out more about it here: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/downloads/files/more_control_and_pkg_man.txt I have si...

Hi Sunburnt :)
Hi rdog; How about ditching legacy installed packages for no-install package types? If apps. are no-install, then no ( or very little ) management is needed. Puppy`s SFS files are a good example, but they only work with a union file system. RoxApps, AppDirs, and AppPkg all work with no union, but a...

Fatdog64, Linux From Scratch, Custom Package Management
I wasn't sure where to put this post. Mods feel free to move this post if you desire. I have been working on a "different" package management system that was developed for the Linux From Scratch project. I didn't invent this package management system but I have made significant changes to ...

Apparently it is the filesystem, not the encrypted file it contains, that is somehow corrupted. Is that correct? The pupsave file contains a filesystem that is compressed using squashfs and then layered using aufs with other filesystems which are also compressed and saved in files using squashfs. S...

How to repair a corrupted encrypted pupsave file
These are my notes that I thought I would share. This still works with Precise 5.4.3. ## Access encrypted save file ## Note: you need to have a free loop device, you can't use them all up with ## mounted SFS files and expect this to work. ## Find a free loop device #losetup-FULL -f /dev/loop2 ## Con...

no keyboard at console
Hi, I am trying Slackbones and noticed that when using an encrypted save file my USB keyboard is not functioning such that I can enter the password for the save file while booting. The keyboard works in the grub menu but by the time the password prompt appears it is not. I haven't had any issues bef...

64 arch version
Hi,
I am testing out the ArchPup and thinking it would be nice to have a 64 bit version. I have run 64 bit Arch for a while and would like to have a 64 bit puppy of some kind.
Great job by the way.
Thanks,
Rob

There are a couple of possibilities. 1. Your sda2 partition has some corruption. What filesystem does it have? 2. The initrd file did not get copied correctly. 3. Your BIOS or your version of GRUB cannot handle Fatdog's humongous initrd. I have a problem when booting Fatdog off a USB drive. Hi rcrs...

Error 16 booting FatDog64 611 from grub
I decided to try Fatdog64-611-firefox.iso and Fatdog64-611-seamonkey.iso and I am getting the same error from both while attempting to boot from a frugal install using grub. Booting from the iso burned to a DVD+RW works fine. The downloaded ISO's md5sum to the correct values. Let me explain... # pwd...

Opinions on a new puppy possibility
I have been using Puppy Lupu 5.2, I started with an earlier version. My preferred use of this puppy has evolved with my needs and experimentation. I put so much time into customization and sfs builds that I'm hesitant to redo it all for Slacko 5.3.3. One of the things I especially liked about Puppy,...
