Bugs on Lucid Puppy 511
1. HD install on sda4, when active, touches files on Debris/Debian install on sda2. THIS IS BAD ENGINEERING. 2. Frugal sda1 and HD sda4 pick up the sda1 save sfs. This severely limits development possibilities (no multiple intalls) 3. Universal installer fails to cp initrd.gz which causes HD install...

A Boot Comparison
I thought that those who develop the kernel for the canonical pups might find this worth looking into. I'm not looking to get something done; this is only a place to look if you care to go looking. I just tried installing Puppy 511 with the Universal Installer. Both full and frugal gave Grub Error 1...

Fixed error with grub4dos
My goal was to have a Linux only box. I was hoping for Puppy-only but that didn't work out. But this is a solution for Linux only and not a Windows box that also has linux I tried installing Puppy 511 with the Universal Installer, both frugal and full installs. Both gave Grub Error 18 when booted, s...

GRUB Error 18
Now I'm not being a control freak here and I'm not your mother. But I have an idea for a signal-only thread with no noise. If you have had Grub Error 18 on boot AND fixed it, then -- IF YOUR FIX IS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE ALREADY HERE -- add it. If you only have a comment and it's on-topic, do a Quote ...

I AM IN WITH GRUB4DOS
I am writing you from Puppy's frugal boot on my HD. I downloaded grub4dos on sourceforge. I copied grub4dos.exe to /. I did a "ln -s /boot/grub/menu.lst" in /. Then I added two lines to menu.lst: title load grub4dos kernel /grub4dos.exe and I changed the delay in menu.lst to 30. It was at ...

No Hardly Nothin'
... no CD Drive, no USB boot possible?
I can't take the Puppy CD out of the drive b/c there's only 180MB of RAM. And the BIOS is too old for a USB boot. I'm looking into the grub4dos post through micko.
Other suggestions welcome.

Where Things Stand
Left to itself Puppy could not install a loadable hd or frugal. Antix couldn't either. Neither could do it whether I let them have total control or whether I did the partitions. Debris loaded fine. The box: A 2000 (that's the year) AOpen with a 2000 bios. 533Mhz, 180M RAM, 40 Ghd. The menu.lst (debr...

no holding back
And I hope r_e_h is not pulling back and will share any interesting solution he will find.
No pulling back here. I'm loading my box with Puppy this weekend. And loading boxes always has its unpleasant surprises (read "gparted" -- I'm going back to cfdisk aft...

Re: Perhaps Only One Step Away
Maybe best to demo your experience level by submitting something for testing.
You can think of me as a nooby in Puppy. Personally, I may do no more than add Emacs and LaTex and lilypond to P511, dump everything I don't use down to the wallpaper, and remaster. But I ...

Recovering Console Head
Hello r_e_h, welcome to the kennels. Do I take it twm means text wm? I guess you want to do more low level development then... kernel, init stuff etc.
Thanks for the welcome. I plan on remastering first. I need latex and lilypond and emacs and don't need a lot of ...

Perhaps Only One Step Away
After reading the Technical Basics on your developer page, I think Puppy could be only one step away from the basic dist having a core sfs (currently lupu_511.sfs) and an app_511.sfs which would hold the bulk of the current lupu. Right now you can pick an sfs in the boot mgr and reboot to load it (I...

I see you readin'
People are reading my post above and I know they know more about Puppy than I know, you know, but they won't tell me what they know so I can not-know less than I know now. You know? So let me give you something to shoot at. Tell me how this sounds: Partitions 5 Gig Stable Puppy 511 -- I won't mess a...

Praise for your Forum
I had something I wanted to say about Puppy to its developers the other day. But I was reluctant to use the forum. Like a beaten dog, I avoid forums because they are so often unpleasant. So I emailed Mr. Kauler with my remarks, even though his page said he preferred I use the forum. Then I felt disc...

What's an Ideal Puppy Developer Install?
I'm about to set up a box so that I can both run Puppy as a normal user and develop Puppy. I plan to make a puplet useful to what I do. I also plan on exploring Woof. So I might have my own normal use install and then a couple other ideas going on the box. Any suggestions on partitions (number, size...

No bad tinycore
It seems I wasn't clear about the point I tried to make. I don't think Puppy should be smaller. It should just have two pieces: the core piece and the matching apps piece. If you want the whole new thing, the two pieces are in the new ISO. If you are updating your own apps -- emacs, latex, lilypond,...

The Point of Puppy
After having sat on a very customised Slackware 10 for five years, changes have forced me out into the dist world again in search of a new tortoise shell to live in for the next five. I think it will be Puppy 511 Your whole Puppy thing is a very intelligent approach to technology. To me the core see...

Networking Wizards - constructive criticism
I have been looking at new dists to replace the one I have used for several years and have found so many things to like about Puppy that there is no room to list them here. But I have a criticism of the networking in recent variants. In Puppy 511, the dist identified my wireless usb, loaded the driv...
