Checking /proc/asound/modules indicates there are two modules both marked as "snd_hda_intel" at index 0 and 1.
This doesn't seem right. Is there anyway to force a manual auto-detection of the sound cards again from the command line?

having trouble with sound
I am having problems getting sound working on my laptop. I'm running precise 5.4.3 off of a usb stick. The laptop is newish and has an amd e450 processor. Anyway I think the problem is that the machine has two sound cards, and a card associated with hdmi output is the default. I have tried using the...

ahci mode drivers?
I had a similar problem booting puppy on a laptop recently. I had changed the sata drivers to legacy ide mode in bios in order to install windows XP. I forgot that I had done so and my puppy live CD would not boot giving me an error that the SFS file could not be found. Switching back to ahci mode d...

Slacko 5.33- where in file structure is xwin?
I am trying to covert a frugal slacko install to a headless system. I found this thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=246567 and it teaches modifying the xwin script to remove the results of probing for new hardware. Unfortunately, xwin is not in the location indicated in the thre...

It worked! Thanks for your help. Now I have a related question. I have tried using an xterm -e command from an ssh connection on a remote machine. It starts the command but the output does not get sent to the ssh shell on the remote machine. Is there anyway to send the ouput from the xterm -e comman...

Howto write a shell script that leaves the shell open
I am trying to write shell script that runs a couple of simple shell commands related to my video card. i.e. aticonfig --od-enable aticonfig --odgt the latter command is supposed to display a line that shows the temperature of my video card. When I run this script no shell window is opened and I don...

No time to enter boot parameters when booting
I'm booting a vanilla slacko 5.33 off a usb stick. When I boot I'm not given the prompt where I can enter the boot parameters. The boot process seems to progress past this point so I can't for example, enter puppy pfix=ram to not use a save file on the usb stick. Is the 5 second wait to boot that no...

Not letting me make the choice to save
I'm booting a vanilla slacko 5.33 frugal install off a usb stick. When I shut down, I'm not given the choice to save back to usb stick. Apparently it just saves without any input from me because changes do persist across a reboot. When I reboot I get an window that says x was not shut down properly ...

unrar?
I can't seem to unrar some archive using the "zip" icon on the desktop. The application apparently doesn't work with rar files. Is there any easy way to add this functionality to Racy 5.3?

SOLVED
Doing a little research I tried switching to the evdev driver. I got the name of my mouse and the event number using the command "cat /proc/bus/input/devices". Here are the relevant sections of the xorg.conf file that got the left and right buttons to work as they did when there was no mou...

cat /etc/mousebuttons
Mine shows "3" but all 5 buttons work :1=left,2=right,3=middle,4=scollforth,5=scrollback .
I have also a 7 button mouse but 6=2 and 7=3 .
Xorg vesa_drv.so ATM instead of nv_drv.so .

Lucid 5.2 working on HP Pavilion dv6500
Recently bought HP Pavilion dv6500 at a garage sale. Dead hard drive but with 1GB of memory and a working DVD RW. I got it working with the lucid 5.2 live CD. The machine has an NVIDIA graphics chip (detects as Geforce7140M/nForce630M) and an 1.8 GHz dual core athlonx64 CPU. After boot and normal co...

Lucid 5.2 can't get 7 button mouse to work
Hi- I run Lucid 5.2 on a laptop without a hard drive by booting from live CD. Booting off the live CD enables my 7 button microsoft usb mouse to function in all respects. When I update the video drivers however, I lose the functionality of the left and right buttons. The NVIDIA driver install runs t...

Successful Lucid 5.2 install on Aspire 3810TZ
Hi- I recently successfully installed lucid 5.2 on my laptop using a usb key and I learned several things that may be useful to other new users. This is my second attempt at a puppy install as I tried to install 4.3.1 about a year ago but was unable to get wireless networking working or get the disp...
