The driver installed in Xubuntu, but it behaves exactly the same as in PCLinuxOS; everything runs fine - including youtube and other forms of flash video - until I try playing a video file in VLC (or any other video player), whereupon it plays a couple frames and then restarts the X server. I've no ...

I guess I'll try getting Xubuntu running with it - hopefully it isn't the exact same driver PCLinuxOS uses and won't crash on video play.

Xrandr fails in changing resolution

I'm running Precise 5.6.1 on a Packard Bell MH35 laptop (pup-sysinfo report here ). It has an utterly, utterly awful SiS 671 video adapter that I haven't been able to run well with anything (Win7 and 8: works but flash video stutters like crazy; Debian: loads generic driver and limits resolution to ...

Suspend shuts down X

I have Slacko 5.5 installed on a laptop (Packard Bell MH35). If I push the power button and then suspend it it goes into sleep mode properly, but when I wake it up again it shows me a shell prompt. I can restart xwin from there, but everything I had in it is obviously lost. I'm using vesa mode, if i...

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I'm having a similar issue, except my HD access is a lot more intense, about once per second. I can hear the heads move as something accesses data. I have a 2GB swap partition, but according to swapon -s it is currently mounted but not being used. Here they are...

Ok, but what about generic use? I have no need for superspecialized things like building stuff for Android.

Slacko vs Precise

I'm not a newbie, but I suppose this question is n00b-ish enough that it should go in this subforum. I can't quite figure out why I should prefer one over the other. I understand the key difference that one draws from Slackware packages and the other one from Ubuntu ones, but what does this entail f...

Slacko 5.3.1 on USB flash drive won't power down EeePC

I have Slacko 5.3.1 installed on a USB thumbdrive. When I try to shutdown or reboot it saves to partition, then restarts the GUI. I'm forced to then shut it down by keeping the power button pressed. If I open the terminal and just give it the "halt" command it says "system halted"...

Desktop alternative?

I like Puppy, and I like it a lot more since it started supporting Ubuntu packages. However, I don't use it as anything more than a quick repair system because the way it handles the desktop sends me into apoplectic fits. So, a question: can I have a normal desktop under Puppy, as in most other dist...
