I like the new mouse pointer icons as well.
It's funny how even the smallest things can have a big impact on the visual appeal of a GUI.

I think it's called a Gensplash. I've done it once on an ex-Gentoo install. There's a Gentoo HOWTO in the Gentoo Wiki. I also believe Ubuntu uses a slightly different technology called Usplash.

I'm not sure how you'd "transfer" the technology across to Puppy.
