Puppy 2.14, Kernel 2.6, older laptop, NO sound problems!

This is a rave. I've been using Puppy continuously and been a fan since late 2003, though I surely haven't posted to the forum for some two years. I was disappointed when Puppy left kernel 2.4 behind, but lo and behold, since early in the 2 series, Puppy's 2.6 kernel has supported ALL of my laptop's...

Kudos & dot pup bugs w/1.0.7 (xorg?)

1.0.7 - wow! Takes my breath away it's so luscious. I've been away for a while. (Sorry, but but I've been perfecting my big distro skills.) I have recent experience with 1.0.6 (giant leap forward) and have just installed 1.0.7 on my main computer. Getting up and running with xorg was a breeze. Good ...

AbiWord 2.2.7 why?

This message ins't intended to be as harsh as it may sound. Puppy continues to be one of the most exciting Linux releases around. But this printing bug is very important to Puppy's future. Why has Puppy continued to use the upgraded Abiword (from version 2.0.12 to 2.2.7) when printing is still somew...

Kernel for compiling (for Barry)

On second thought, acpi would not be the problem on the Libretto, as I compiled the kernel so that acpi only is enabled on PCs manufactured in 2001 or later. On earlier PCs the kernel does not enable acpi. Right. My KDS laptop "needs" and "loves" ACPI. The major problem seems to...

Hey On a tangent, I'm not convinced that moving to the 2.6 kernel is a real step forward. The newer hardware really benefits from it, but 2.6 has its own issues, especially with older hardware, plus bloat. Currently I'd have to agree with figueroa ... I have been testing the 1.0.2 core on several m...

Would it make sense to consider printing text files through enscript rather than AbiWord?

1.0.2 CD-ROM driver bug?

This afternoon, I set up a lean version of Puppy 1.0.2 unleashed on six PCs in our school's computer lab. But, booting the CD failed on both machines that had 8X IDE CD-ROM drives. The initial booting goes OK, but when it gets to the pont where the screen reads "Uniform CD-ROM Driver 3.20"...

Which kernel to use for compiling? (for Barry)

I read today's "News" about using the new Mandriva for compiling puppy programs. I had been a mandrake user from way back around version 5 and was a RedHat user before that and a Slackware user before that. What I've experienced is that everything Mandrake after 9.2 was pretty badly hosed ...

Some 1.0.2 bugs

1. broken printing in AbiWord (I think that should have delayed the release.). 2. On first boot (I've installed about six times so far on two different machines), often the mouse doesn't want to work. Sometimes rebooting helps. One time I had to remove the /dev/mouse symlink that pointed improperly ...

Try again. It works. Perl is an attachment with the first message and VIM with the second message.

Re: Size???

How big did OpenOffice expand too? I'm looking for some sort of Office Suite but not something that will greatly expand from the 60 MB i'm running right now. A lot! 200 megs. It's also resource intensive. Not recommended for less than 128 megs of RAM or CPUs slower than 400 MHZ or so. If you don't ...

Re: Installing Gimp?

How did you install Firefox 1.01 and Open office? Did they have to be compiled or what? Very simple. I downloaded the Firefox 1.0.3 tarball, expanded it with: tar xvzf nameoftarball.tgz (or it may have been ____.tar.gz which means the same thing), which puts the installation files into a directory,...

Re: Getting a Shell

I need to type things and run things from a shell. Where is the shell ? Do you mean you need to run thngs from a command line, or in a particular shell? The default Puppy shell is BusyBox's sh shell. That's what you are in when you launch the rxvt terminal or exit the window manager. There is an op...

Acrobat Reader 5.0.1 for Fat Puppy

The Adobe Acrobat Reader INSTALL script fails at the very end, but the only thing left undone by the script is editing the startup script in /installdirectory/Acrobat5/bin/acroread.sh The INSTALL script fails because it tries to call 'ed' but there is no 'ed' in Puppy. What it wants 'ed' to do is ch...

I want to install Puppy on my old Compaq Presario laptop. My floppy drive is dead, and i see that the install process creates a boot floppy. Can i install without a floppy disk drive? Cd drive is OK - and a flash drive is a possibility too. There may be better options, but if you want to stick with...
