The laptop will not even start up from a live CD if the kernel is newer than 2.6 .??. If you are lucky you get to flashing curser after choosing from the menu, if you are unlucky the computer simply ignores the CD.
This applies to all flavours of Linux.

Good to hear you got some version of Puppy working. :D For Lucid 528. Did you ever try to see if there was anything here that would help? Maybe something here about your specific wifi dongle. Drivers for Puppy 5.1-5.2.8 with 2.6.33.2 kernel http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=59000 Tri...

Here is the latest and hopefully the final update. USB arrived, did not expect it so soon. Tried it with the 5.2.8 exe on C drive. Network set up did not find it, even the Belkin was visible at that point. Tried Frisbee, still not visible. Not feeling too positive. Tried 5.2.8.6 on the live CD. Exac...

Downloaded iso of 5.2.8.6 and burned to live CD. Loaded fine. Started connection wizard exactly as before, found Belkin USB as Wlan0 but when I did a search it did not find any connections, not even the BT one. Closed live session. Started Puppy as usual from .exe windows set up.. Started connection...

I had spotted 5.2.8.6 was available but since I use EXE installer and that version is not available as an EXE I saw little point trying it. The laptop will not boot from USB and booting from CD is so slow the EXE method is the only way of getting a decently quick laptop. Looked on E-Bay and found th...

Thanks for that, makes sense with regards to the BT one not being encrypted. The laptop is a Pentium 4M one but I have tried literally dozens of Linux flavours on it and only those with a kernel version 2.6 will work. Newer ones get as far as a flashing curser at best. Read about the ndiswrapper but...

Problems with wireless connection
12 year old Dell laptop, no wireless card so use a Belkin USB memory stick device. In XP it finds all the various router/modems on the street and quite happily connects to the Virgin Superhub we have (its a Netgear product) but all this happens so slowly it makes the computer virtually unusable. So ...

I recently installed Win 7 Pro on a 5 or 6 year old Dual core pentium laptop which has 2 gb ram. The install disk was the latest image from the Microsoft site thus no bloat, just bought the licence. The laptop boots in about a minute and uses about 500 mb of ram while its idling. The only additions ...

My XP boots in a minute on pentium 3s...sounds like you need some serious fixing doing there...stuck updates perhaps? mike Its a Pentium 4 with 512 mb ram XP and actually boots in a couple of minutes. Problem is the computer is unusable for the next 18 minutes while it checks for Windows updates, l...

Sorted (I hope), appears to be working just as it should with none of the messing about with floppies/USB's or CD's. To complete the details the installer does not give you an option where to install it thus its on c, end of story. When I ran it for the first time on shut down it offered an option o...

OK. Had a look today. The HD on the old laptop I am intending to use is only 20gb and has 2 partitions C and D. Widows is installed in C but there is more free space in D. Having read through the information please tell me if I am correct in my understanding that Puppy must be installed where Window...

Thanks again for your reply, not got round to doing anything yet, been erecting a new fence. Had one thought, when I read up about Puppy initially one of the advantages often quoted was the fact that unless you mounted your hard drives for a good reason there was no way for a virus etc to infect the...

Thanks for that. Presume after its installed (are there any awkward questions) you have to reboot the laptop and then go the through the setting up process like running a live CD. Just for my sanity is the setting up as simple as the first time you run a Live CD and do you still have to create a sav...

This has probably been answered on here before but cannot find anything specific. Been using Puppy for a couple of years, 5.2.8 on an old (2002) Dell laptop and Phat Slacko on a more recent Dell laptop. The more recent one is not the issue, it works fine with Phat Slacko on an external HD but the ol...

Puppy will not reinstall
Been using Puppy 5.2.8 now for a couple of months and very happy. Read about the different types and decided to have a look round at the weekend. MacPup loaded up and looked nice but nothing very different other than appearance and I did not feel as happy with E17 as the standard desktop. Add to tha...

OK, here's the latest. After all the suggested changes to Firefox there was no difference to the fact it was eating at least 4 Mb of the .2fs file every time I browsed. Not a huge amount I admit but if I boot up 4 times a day that's 16 mb a day and as I said before the space will soon disappear. Tri...
