I had trouble with my 1998 PC, and needed to load a module in Slacko5.x. "dmesg" output identified the sound card: isapnp: scanning for PnP cards: 00:01: card 'CS4236B' "lsmod |grep -i 4236" produced no output, so module wasn't loaded. modprobe snd-cs4236 "lsmod |grep -i 423...

I had no sound on Slacko, and this fixed it: run "retrovol" click boxes to select functions click on red areas to boost volume (indicated by amount of yellow) After doing that for all functions, I deselected them one by one until left with just 2 that were necessary. From memory, I think i...

I run Slacko5.5 on a 500MHz PC.

Actually, I run Slacko5.5-PAE, even though the PAE isn't necessary on the old machine. It's just nice to have the same version running on the old and new machines.

It's great that Slacko5.5 supports both a current machine and a 1998 PC.

TeamViewer is free, and works well for remote desktop support:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeamViewer

You can also transfer files within a TeamViewer session.

I'm running it on slacko-PAE-5.5:

TeamViewer: 7.0.9377

I use it to support someone with a PC on Win 7.

I had a problem with looping/stuttering sound on slacko5.4. I never rebooted, just quit Firefox and the problem cleared. For other reasons, I tried slacko5.4-PAE and have never had the problem (uptime=75 days). The PC was always near max memory use, now on PAE "free" shows 7495788 used, wa...

Re: closing jwm windows [solved]

@Tote: It doesn't look like this "feature" can be disabled. Thanks for the reply.

@anikin: Thanks for pointing out that thread. I would have gone through life thinking it was a bug. Now I know it's a "feature".

Thanks for the replies.

closing jwm windows [solved]

EDIT: This is a feature, not a bug! Thanks to anikin for pointing out the thread where this has been discussed. I don't like this feature, but the change in behavior is too trivial to gripe about. A trivial issue with slacko5.5-PAE (no user changes made after bootup), not seen in slacko5.4-PAE: When...

closing jwm windows in slacko5.5-PAE [solved]

FORUM ADMIN: Please delete this post, it was meant for the Slacko5.5 feedback thread. I've copied this post to there. Thank you. EDIT: since this might not be removed, at least I should change the title to be more specific. EDIT: thanks to anikin for the info: This is a feature, not a bug! This post...

slacko5.5-PAE

I wasn't monitoring the Bugs forum, so I missed the announcement of Slacko5.5 on March 4th Seems there should be an announcement in the Users forum. Anyway, I'm posting this from my 1998 500MHz P-III (Katmai) Dell Optiplex GX1 (768MB RAM), running Slacko5.5-PAE. I don't find a problem with PAE, and ...

the package manager lists all programs contained in the separate 'devx.sfs' as installed, whether the actual devx is installed or not. the devx contains python, hence it showing as installed in the ppm. @666philb: Thanks for this. I don't understand the thinking behind the PPM's design. It does not...

PPM and Python (in slacko-5.4)

Running slacko-5.4 PAE (3.4.17-PAE), no modifications or user installed packages. I wanted to learn about Puppy Package Manager, so ran this: /usr/local/petget/pkg_chooser.sh From the GUI, I searched for Python, selecting the slackware-14.0 repository. To my surprise, it showed Python already instal...

I've been running the PAE version for several days (file slacko-5.4-opera-PAE.iso). Other than installing firefox, this has been a hassle free change from the non-PAE version of slacko-5.4. I used to download files to hard drive, but now treat RAM as a RAMDISK. It's nice to have access to all the RA...

If it's true that shutdownconfig is only about saving session data, what follows is the wrong approach. As you said, just don't call shutdownconfig. But if there is any other cleanup in shutdowconfig, then this could be useful and have fewest side effects: Tested, and this works the way I like it (i...

commandline package removal

Say I want to remove all trace of opera (or any unwanted app). Is there a commandline procedure for doing this? I could try to 'find' all relevant files, but might miss some. Maybe the package manager used to install this could tell me where all the files are located. I avoid package managers, since...

If you want to use the Windows key as a modifier then I read that the mask value is "4" but I can't get it to work. I'd like to know where you found that vital info. It is correct, but I couldn't find any reference to a mask value of 4 in the docs. So to run HTOP by pressing Win and h: <K...

.jwm-tray has this: <TrayButton popup="Show Desktop" icon="mini-desktop.xpm">showdesktop</TrayButton> This allows you to minimize all windows and showdesktop by clicking the icon. Apparently, showdesktop is not a command. I'd like to do this without needing the mouse. Is there a ...
