Thanks for the help. I don't know what "supporting kernel driver module" and "xorg modesetting driver" mean, and I can't find a Upup anything thread. I don't really want to bother with finding out the nuts and bolts either - I just want something that works on any PC first time. ...

puppy pfix=nox didn't work - it produced black screen after "loading kernel modules ... " as before, no prompt.

The mobo is ICL D2700MUD, Atom dual core, NM10 chipset, GMA 3600.
