I'd just like to complete my list of Linux distros I tried, none of them without problems. I've realised that rather than choosing the Linux distro, the first thing you should do is to find out which "X window manager" your old computer has the hardware to run, and only then choose a linux...

I have wasted another weekend trying to get some variety of Linux to work on an old computer. Nothing beats Precise Puppy Retro for being able to run Adobe flash streaming video. This is because that distro makes it easy to install Opera with flash already built in. But the drawbacks are that I've t...

I tried a frugal install of Precise Puppy Retro and it didnt work either. The instructions were very unclear, I have to say. It said in an ambiguous and unclear way (like a poor translation from another language) that I must remember to do something, or not do something, before the computer shut dow...

I had already tried the puppy pfix=ram option, still have the same problems. BTW when I did sometimes manage to get the puppy desktop showing, it would not save the file to hard disk at shut-down. There was a red error message saying something about it not being possible to save it. I have now remov...

I do not have any menus of any kind. All I get on the screen is the error message and the prompt "grub rescue>" and nothing else. So I cannot do what you suggest. This occurs very soon after I start the computer. There are no graphics, just the text I have described. I have found this: htt...

Let me describe what I get, perhaps I can then please have some specific instructions on how to get it working. I switch my computer on. (Nothing is in the CD/DVD reader - i.e. NO livecds). It starts up. Soon I see on the screen: "Error: file 'grub/i386-pc/nowal.mod' not found Grub rescue>"...

After full install, "Error: file 'grub/i386-pc/nowal.mod' no

I ran Precise Puppy 571 Retro with the puppy pfix=ram option, then did a full install to my hard disk which previously had Lubuntu on it. After doing the install a pop-up box said I should insert some text into something called GRUB or boot on my computer. I could not find GRUB or boot, only somethi...

Finding and installing "Pets"

1). Am I correct in thinking that "Pets" are programs which have been specially made or converted to run on Puppy, and hence have been tried and tested and can be expected to work successfully? 2). Are ALL the programs which can be found through using the Puppy Package Manager, actually Pe...

Let me describe what happened. Using another Linux distro I plugged in an old USB pendrive that I had previously used with WindowsXP. I thought I had copied some word processor files onto it. But when I plugged the same pen drive in, using another Pupply Linux distro, it appeared to have nothing in ...

What I did with "Rox" that worked was, as far as I recall: Find the file you want to copy, right click and choose "copy" from the menu. Another small window will pop up. Click on the desktop Rox icon again to open a third window. Navigate to where you want the file to go. Drag th...

I have found that when I right-click on the .iso file, one of the options offered is burning to disk, so I used that.

Thanks.

How to use a USB pen drive?

I would like to use a pendrive. I am using Precise Puppy Retro. I have my computer running and I put a pendrive into a USB slot. What do I do next please? Please give instructions in concrete terms (eg. "click once on the vertical green arrow") rather than abstract ("disenbobulate the...

Thanks, I have installed a Matrox graphics card I had in a defunct computer, and it works fine.

The streaming video is much better, still a little choppy but very good considering the old low-spec hardware.

Abiword is now displaying as fast as I can type into it, so that problem solved as well.

Yes thanks I would like help installing Puppy to HD. Over the long weekend I tried several liveCD alternatives to Puppy. Unfortunately nothing appears on both the "old computer" and the "beginner" lists at Distro Watch. Previous investigation indicated that for a computer with CPU =>1GHz and memory =>1GB, then Linux Mint is conside...

How to copy a file from one folder to another?

I am using Precise Puppy 5.7.1 retro. 1. I do not understand how to copy files with ROX filer. When I right click a folder and choose "copy", all I get is a small pop up window that shows the same address as the folder I've just clicked. What am I supposed to do, memorize the address of wh...

I've got no idea what the above means.

I tried double clicking, did not work.
