I feel like I'd be roasted for saying this on Facebook, but: 1) That bot was indistinguishable from either a teenager or a Trump supporter 2) That means it passes the Turing test for artificial intelligence 3) Our immediate response was to kill it. Says something about humans. Kind of like the Victo...

I avoid SanDisk. In my experience has troubles which cannot be fixed through simple reformatting - something about the firmware. but check to make sure the boot flag is on (gparted can do that) as a simple thing I do not think ppl mentioned yet.

If it's going to be active 24/7 I wouldn't use an old computer for this. But you can make the argument that the whole reason that "routers" are distinct from PCs is specifically because they needed to have a really low-power core so they wouldn't be, as mentioned, "killing flies with ...

I think this is fine ... it's just that they won't keep upgrading Windows 7/8 to work on the next processor, and the next, etc. Why would you want to buy Windows 8 (an OS that everyone hates) or 7 (out of mainstream support) for a processor you'll buy two years hence? Why would one expect the OS mak...

You could add the potential for use of an M.2 SSD, which would be a lot faster than SATA -- probably more future proofed if you got a MB with that slot or an extra PCI lane to accommodate if you wanted. Personally my own computer was built just before that kind of went mainstream, so unfortunately I...

Nothing!!! Hahaha

Yeah, right. So obviously, quite a bit. But as they used to say, capitalism is terrible, but it's the least bad system that's been tried.

Hi, wboz--what flavor Linux did you go with, or are you sticking to the ChomeOS and its fast boot? Jake Sorry for delay. On the Chromebook, I have stuck with ChromeOS. Knowing I could run Linux helped me be comfortable with the initial purchase. I had no need after that. I use Ubuntu on my desktop,...

I love 5.2.8. For an older machine I like this for the fast boot speed and I am less fussy about some cosmetic rough edges. Reliable and even up to date with 5287.

Check out the 5287 link that was provided - I had a similar computer and you might even find me asking about wireless :)

I am not. The Chomebook is an excellent device as is. I have a need for basic, instant-on web access. Running Linux would only "enable" me to run programs that would run poorly on the pokey Chromebook, and that I could run on my desktop. But! I want to point out that not any and all Intel ...

Yes. It was terrible. But you knew it was going to be terrible. It was footage from two "challenge" films; clearly no car reviews or studio time had been filmed before the fracas. It's not fair to expect them to make an excellent episode from the material available. And that's leaving asid...

Windows 10 looks quite good. I may consider upgrading the ol' Lenovo if I'm allowed. I don't really know how the upgrades work. The thing will still churn like heck with a 5000rpm HDD. Is that what you have? Looks like a tough computer. I agree keeping it under 65 I don't think you'll have problems. (You may not want to TOUCH it ... !) :) Check out cpufreq. You may be able to keep the cpu at a lower frequency much of the time. Usually that's to save power - not really a concern on...

Have some thoughts on cooling in general, can't help with the temp sensors per se. Fanned or fanless, a heat sink is going to be able to take heat away in proportion to the temperature differential between the inside and outside of the sink. If your room temperature is 40C, first, that sounds terrib...

It's completely deliberate. I don't fully understand why Google partitions like that, though. I think they just like to compartmentalize: one for the boot record, one for the file systems, one for autoupdates, one for restoration etc ... keeps it very secure and robust.

Well it's just an operating system without all the extra programs. You know, kind of how OS used to be out of the box.
