Another problem I have discovered (on the Asus) is that if you boot into Bionic Puppy 8.0 x64, then connect the external (VGA) display, then go to Menu->System->Multiple Monitors Settings->Advanced, enable the VGA display and click Apply, the VGA display is activated for ~15 seconds and then revert...

is it not possibly to have just the boot loader on an sdcard and point it at the eMMC. i have to do something similar with my m2 ssd, i have just the boot loader installed onto a normal drive. The problem seems to be the lack of eMMC support in the standard Puppy 8.0 kernel. When I have time, I am ...

Bionic Puppy 8.0 x64 on Dell Inspiron 1100 3168 Model P25T
A quick post to report that the Bionic Puppy 8.0 x64 Live CD (on USB flash drive) and frugal install to built-in eMMC (using kernel 4.5.12 from Buster x64*) both boot successfully via UEFI, and on preliminary investigation work to varying degrees on a Dell Inspiron 1100 3168 Model P25T laptop. Live ...

I thought legacy grub could also dual-boot Windows by directly chainloading /ntldr (for example)? IIRC, that first became possible with Grub4Dos. In any case, GRUB 0.97 could never have done it if ntldr was in an NTFS partition, which 0.97 could NOT read. Good point (re legacy grub not having NTFS ...

Re: legacy support
read my post, there is no legacy boot item in x542ur too. Recently new NB/PC only support EFI GPT boot. read the post of `bigpup` wrote carefully, it helps my problem as you met. Good luck. Again, PC booting is not my area of expertise but from what I have learned over the past couple of weeks I am...

*SIGH* My post was in response to @rcrsn51 pointing out that legacy grub does not support chainloading ISO images, DIRECTLY CONTRADICTING WHAT THE GENTOO WIKI PAGE STATES : The new ISO (or loop) chainload mechanism makes chainloading a breeze. It is possible to chainload ISO images (LiveCD/DVDs) wi...

As I have said previously, I am not particularly au fait with grub and especially not Grub2 - my experience is primarily with grub4dos. My statements re legacy grub having the capacity to chainload ISOs was based on the Gentoo wiki page. Which I both linked and quoted. And which nobody corrected. M...

@ 3guesses:- Y'know, there's very little mileage in getting mad at forum members. I sense you're pretty frustrated by this, but the maintenance of GRUB2 is absolutely nothing to do with the Puppy community. Like so many other distros out there, all we do is make use of freely available GNU tools. O...

512MB seems quite a chunk for the system to allocate No, that is about the minimum to provide good overall graphics, with what people want to do with computers. What the hardware now needs. Higher resolutions. More and better detail. More color depth. 3D affects. All the fancy eye candy that people...

Grub2 will not chainload ISOs (unlike its predecessor). I am not sure if you understand properly. :? Grub2 does boot/chainload isos. Look for it in the Grub2 manual. Super Grub 2 by the way IS Grub 2 with a lot of search possibilities and standard situations added. Nothing more. The iso, and the in...

You might be able to configure how much ram your onboard video card uses in the bios. I didn't recall being able to adjust the video RAM in the BIOS so I just checked again - there doesn't seem to be any option to do so. 512MB seems quite a chunk for the system to allocate, especially seeing as the...

Sorry - have just noticed this and feel somewhat compelled to share it:
Priceless. Donald Trump would be proud.
(source: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Chainloading)GRUB2 was designed with an improved chainload mode when compared to GRUB Legacy.

@3guesses See also: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=118043 For a Super Grub2 Disk solution. NB Only applies to compliant Pups listed there. Thanks ETP, but it seems to me that these are all work-arounds of a fundamental problem: Grub2 will not chainload ISOs (unlike its predecessor). T...

I'm going to add my two-penn'orth here. It's probably not welcome, nor needed, but I'm adding it all the same..... I'm really amazed at all the trouble 3guesses is having with this. I had to replace my desktop tower recently, because the old Compaq just died on me during its annual spring-clean aft...
