OMG Robert123, I had no idea http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ existed.
Thank you so much. What a great relief! :)

Now I need to sit down and work out how to point the Puppy Package Manager to it.

Good points both. I have tried Puppy slacko and found it difficult, but you're right. I should revisit it. I love Rox. I use it all the time, doing a lot of programming with RoxApps. They are wonderful. I expect I'd be able to use Rox on Arch. I'll have to think more on what you say about it being a...

And here we are now with Ubuntu having deleted all their old archives so we can no longer add programs from them. That means Lucid and Precise are severely wounded... perhaps even fatally. I'm an obsessive collector so I've been hoarding heaps of programs from the Ubuntu archives, but even so I keep...

I should address your point about the disadvantages a man has when reporting violence against him. I am sure there are cases where the man is expected to just suck it up, whereas it is true that women are able to get restraining orders and flee to women's shelters, but consider the seriousness of th...

learn2code, well, I can poke a hole in what you say right off the bat. My brother is very tall, very strong, and very gentle. His ex-wife is a terrible bully and studied law. When he wanted a divorce from her due to the bullying he naturally wanted access to their 2 kids. She naturally wanted to exc...

Too early. My dogs woke me and wouldn't let me get back to sleep. I'll write this, have breakfast, and get back to bed. I got the first set of data from http://www.aic.gov.au/publications/current%20series/mr/21-40/mr21/04_homicide.html table 10. I agree that this could be presented more clearly... m...

He said that 80% of domestic violence is perpetrated by the man. But he is seen cases where the woman is violent. He knows the difference. this is way off (its a lot closer to 50.) most female-on-male domestic violence goes unreported, and when it is reported it is rarely taken seriously. I'll use ...

musher0 , thank you for pointing me to Sophocles' Antigone. You're correct, I haven't read it. :) But having now downloaded it from Project Gutenberg at your recommendation, I will. Thank you also for pointing me to Molière . I'm always on the lookout for good reading and have now added 22 of his b...

:) musher0, I guess that means you haven't watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or read Watchmen . Both those tend to undercut standard understandings and preconceived notions. One of my favorite episodes of Buffy is in season 6, episode 16, "Normal Again", which challenges the notion of reali...

Burn_IT , you are welcome to disbelieve in the Flynn Effect regardless of its reality. You're also free to disbelieve in gravity. :) Yes, there are difficulties in getting practical useful results from IQ tests that can be applied to ordinary life. The fact is, though, that giving the same tests to...

Burn_IT , no, I'm not confusing knowledge with intelligence. See the link I provided regarding the Flynn Effect. Bruce B , yes, it would be interesting to compare with places that have been completely isolated from the trappings of the modern world. However such comparisons would have to be done ca...

Bruce B, it is a fact that each generation is more intelligent than the one preceding it. There are many theories as to why this is happening, though nobody really knows for sure exactly why it is. I have my own ideas as to why. There are plenty of experiments that show that enriching the environmen...

Here is an additional bit of info that's interesting. I installed xvkbd to give me a mouse-clickable on-screen keyboard for the Puppy that doesn't recognise my keyboard. However when I try to run it, it causes a segmentation fault. It works fine on the CD-booted version of exactly the same Puppy ver...

Thanks for the suggestions musher0. Unfortunately I had been compiling a lot of programs as well as installing a few using PPM over the week preceding this problem. I tend to leave my computer running continuously for weeks at a time... sometimes months. I doubt that a PPM-installed program is causi...

learnhow2code , thankfully, over the longer term and larger scale things are improving. The Flynn Effect means each generation is more intelligent than the one preceding it. As intelligence grows so does compassion and morality and the desire to avoid conflict. The world has been growing more peace...

learnhow2code, 90% of what you wrote I emphatically agree with. Left vs Right I like to call evil vs eviller. You're right that people are generally becoming disenchanted with politicians. We are due for a big change in politics. Will it come? I doubt it. The politicians are too comfortable in their...

musher0, you're lucky living in Canada. Your country has been walking away from the divisive, cynical, racist liars toward sanity. Your law that prohibits the media from publishing lies helps. Our astonishingly dishonest right-wing politicians in Australia are hell-bent on destroying our national he...
