I reported earlier that when the Resize Personal Storage utility rebooted the PC it didn't remove /etc/.XLOADED & hence next boot would start with the CLI. Well with 1.0.8r1 it seems to have got worse :/ The first boot I got the message that /etc/.XLOADED couldn't be created as Read-only filesys...

This seems to me to meet your criteria, yet is already very advanced & usable.
Adding a few more developers to that project seems better than starting a new one...

NB My DotPup does set the JAVA_HOME env & adds to the path.
- both set to the /usr/local/jre symlink
(dotpup.sh attached)

I've found it perfectly stable for my use.
I didn't test it with an existing Java install as I didn't think that was it's target audience, but maybe I was wrong.
