I'm quite sure the drive is not spinning down. The heads are just continuously loading and unloading. This is a new laptop hard drive and the latest stable Puppy, all on default settings. I know what is happening is wrong and stupid. I don't know if it is a newer problem or a been-around-for-many-ye...

hard drive install of Ubuntu 9.04
I just did a normal hard drive install of Ubuntu 9.04 on the same laptop and hard drive. Everything went pretty smoothly, and the hard drive has been almost too quiet (aside from some serious momentary isolated hard clunking-type noises while it was working hard to install to the hard drive). It see...

HD Head Load Cycle Count ***WARNING***
There is a potential danger if Puppy Linux or many other OSes are installed on a laptop hard drive (2.5-in hard drive), of exceeding the rated life-time Head Load/Unload Cycle Count rating of the hard drive. Modern laptop hard drives are typically rated for 200,000 to 600,000 head load/unload cycles...

smartmontools
Please add smartmontools to future versions of Puppy. Everyone is advised to use smartctl from time to time to check on the health of their hard drives by logging and inspecting the SMART data. At least, let's have an official smartmontools PET package in the official PETget package manager. See als...

TEENpup 2009 Legacy review
TEENpup 2009 is a very impressive bundle, a wonderful big fat pup, filling a 700MB CD. (Is there a good over-view summary guide to the Big Pups? There are so many puplets that we need a pupletwatch to sort them out...) I tried it out on a fairly modern computer: 2800MHz Pentium 4 ASUS P4PE (2003?) 1...

GPicView easy automatic slideshow
GPicView 0.1.11 in Puppy Linux 4.2.1 is wonderful! It makes it so easy to start showing all the files in a directory as an automatic slideshow!! Just open one picture in GPicView, click on the triangle or type W, and a fully automatic slideshow starts, a new picture every 5 seconds!!! It is then eas...

This Thread is Too Big
This nine-page 133-posts thread dating back to 2007 is getting unwieldy, particularly for the top-main thread in this Suggestions section. Could an admin restart the thread, or archive the pre-2009 material, or make the thread come up last-page-first, or put the thread in most-recent-first display m...

Pctorrent tweaks please
(Hoping this thread is read by developers, and still a "wish list for next puppy release" -- if not, please move to right place, or tell me where the right place is.) Pctorrent-1.4 in Puppy 4.1.2 (and 4.2 seems the same) is a little too bare-bones and confusing for this new torrent user. T...

I care!
Yes, I do care -- I want Midnight Commander! I just tried to install mc on MiPup2 LiveCD. I got lost in outdated repositories, missing dependencies, claims that things would be queued that were not, suggestions to reboot (which is not applicable in pure LiveCD mode)... Please, someone, add some real...

The dotpups page:
http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/developm ... al/dotpups
is still pointing to an old 5.33 version of smartmontools. How can we get that page updated, or redirected to a more recent collection of pups and pets?
