I have Xenial and Artful running very nicely on two laptops of similar specs. An old Toshiba Equium L10, Pentium M "Dothan", 1.5GB ram, and a Samsung V25 with a Pentium 4 with 1GB ram. Both run like they were brand new. I particularly like those two Puppies.

Thanks Everyone, Like I mentioned, this was just for fun. I have had a hobby for a while now taking old laptops and trying to bring them back to life. I tried Slacko 5.3, but it would only load to a partial desktop, something called "XLOAD" in the top left corner, and the task bar. No apps...

Thank you. That just seems to create a ZIP file, and when extracted just goes back to the exe file. It's me not knowing what I am doing.

Thanks for your help

Thanks, but doesn't seem to work. The file is only 15mb and it just loops and stays in "File upload in progress." Never finishes.

Hi

Thanks for replying. I have it on a USB stick. It won't let me paste on this reply. Not sure how to link you to it.

ath5k module, where to find?

Hello Everyone I have a real dinosaur, a Pentium III Coppermine laptop with 128MB of memory. Just for fun, I have Puppy 3.1 running from the CD with a save file. It runs very well. I have the 2.6.24 kernel (about 8 years old, I think.) My problem is, as you might expect, this thing has no wireless c...

Thank you for your reply. I am in the process of relearning everything. I am not a Techie (actually semi-retired now at 68 years old), but I have been using Linux on and off since the mid-nineties. I can find my way around, it just takes me longer and requires a little effort on my part than someone...

So Glad to Have Rediscovered Puppy

Hello Everyone, Well, it has been six years since I have posted on this forum. I just wanted to applaud the Puppy developers, the community and the distro itself. I have have been away from my Linux hobby for a good while. My little daughter was born in 2011 and that is where most of my time goes no...

I have display issues with this old laptop with any linux using a kernel later than 2.6.35. Modesetting began to be handled inside the kernel in kernels after this one. This because I have a very old graphics chip (the Intel 82845G) and it uses the i915 driver which doesn't work without that entry i...

Thanks

SOLVED

I would delete the find line And add (hd0,5) before the /puppy520/.... in each line Thank you. This is exactly what I did. I posted because I had never had any issues with a frugal install before and was not familiar with the "find" line. All OK, but it does boot to a black screen. This o...

Thanks for your reply. This is on the /home partition of the main Linux distro I have installed. I just want to add the proper entry to that Grub install, not replace it (if I understand correctly.)

Thanks again

Frugal Install - getting error 15, file not found

Hello Everyone I should be able to figure this out, but it has me a little baffled. I did a frugal install on an) old laptop. I installed the file to /dev/sda6 (the partition that my /home files are located), and then just simply copied and pasted the suggested entry into menu.lst, but it is not fin...

Well, it did work, and as likely as it sounds, I had tried that before and it had no effect. Tried it again, logged out and back in. Son-of-a-gun....working now.

Thank you, that was very helpful.

Touchpad "tap-to-click" stopped working

Hello Everyone, Well, I may have spoke too soon about Puppy handling this old laptop. Had everything setup, then out of the blue a reboot failed to load X. Tried reconfigured a number of times, and finally just restoring the original configuration got my desktop back. However, since then the tap-to-...
