Ok, so I tried 002. Actually I had already tried out 001 yesterday, but this forum hates me and I couldn't log in to post the findings... 1) Java worked fine for me - I downloaded my favorite programmer editor jedit (a heavyweight Java program that does everything except coffee), installed it via it...

The ALT-gr chars work fine on both my IT keyboards (one is a regular PS2 105 keys model and the other one is a non-standard luminous thing I bought at PC-City). Giorgio, did you install the Italian locale it_IT@euro from the control panel ? Also: Beaver don't seem to be able to handle some national ...

AFAIK Opera 9.0 should have "rich editing" implemented. However 9.0 isn't final yet and the current version 8.54 doesn't have that feature, so chances are that the wiki is detecting Opera and serving it a non-rich page. Does anything change if you set up Opera 9.0 to identify as IE or Mozi...

Back to the official Puppy2 release: to me Puppy+Opera is the best possible combo (with the possible exception of Puppy+Opera+XFCE). I am not sure about making it a "slim" puppy since it is so capable, but then that's what pupget and remaster scripts are for. :) The official Puppy2+Opera r...

Ok, just a few hints because I don't want to hijack the thread. - Working with Dillo as a browser is bad enough, trying to pull a download from the Opera web site with it is a nightmare (hint: clicking on "javascript" takes to a javascript-free page that works somewhat better in Dillo). - ...

Damn, and I just manager to install Opera 9.0B2 into Barebones :D (it is a pain btw. Hint: forget Dillo, use gftp instead, get the shared tgz package from ftp.opera.com, unpack, run the install script). does it mean that now we have a Pupget/DotPup/Unleashed of Opera 9 Beta 2 (not Preview 2) ? Ok, n...

What purple_ghost said. You want to use the manifacturer tools for your hard disk. - get the tools for your brand and model of disk, either from the CD purple_ghost posted or from the manifacturer's site. In either case you'll end up with a bootable floppy of CD. You have to boot from it, do not run...

First, it seems that some software that you reinstall after formatting is infected. Install from clean sources (this includes the WinXP CD) and re-download any freeware/shareware from the official sites . Install a antivirus program first, and scan everything you restore from backups. The sequence s...

I just tried it with Puppy2. I couldn't find a /root/.fonts , and it didn't get created, even with the modification suggested by wet.interrupt. So I created the symlink manually and rebooted, now I have the Windows fonts in Abiword and Seamonkey. Note: For some reason on my WinXP Home (retail, insta...

My home PC is like the Acid Test for Puppies - the previous versions only ran in RAM with no hard disk and no sound. I am glad to report that Puppy2 passed the test with flying colors - apart from a couple of mostly cosmetic buglets that I reported in the Puppy2 forum Puppy2 works so well for me tha...

For what's worth, I downloaded and installed the it_IT@euro locale from the menu "Choose locale" option and it worked fine for me (first time I get the Euro sign in a distro without major hacking). Maybe it is some glitch with the specific locale file you are after ?

All 4 of them, in the interest of science of course ;)

I do hope that the inbuilt games have no sound, for one thing I'd rather have an extra app than a couple mb of bleeps. I only wish I had realized it before I went on a soundcard troubleshooting spree... :D

Sound in games: a sanity check

Sound configures nicely on this box, the card is detected correctly, the modules load, I can play CDs and MP3 files and scare the neighbour's dog with the Snack sound generator. However I have been unable to get any audio when playing the games that come with Puppy, no matter how much I tweak the mi...

I'm just back from a attempt to connect a spare PC to the home TV, so I thought I'd add my two cents. - X.org didn't configure nicely, it kept telling that everything was fine but I didn't get to see any X video output. I suspect X.org was configuring the VGA output of the video card rather than the...

You may be using either the "compress drive" option in Windows, or a custom hard disk driver. This sucks because there is no easy way to go back to regular FAT32, your best chance is a backup/restore but make sure to research all the pitfalls. If you ever install WinXP don't use the NTFS f...

I went as far as downloading it, and I don't see why it shouldn't work. First, I assume there is some kind of performance advantage to using the SCSI controller, else why would it be there? My personal experience is that I didn't notice any huge performance hit by switching from ATA100 to ATA33. The controller can't make the disk supply data at a faster rate anyway, so...

Heh, the "beast" I was referring to is a ATA100 Promise controller on a Asus A7V mainboard. You'll probably find 2 unused IDE slots (unless the CD drive is already using one). Just connect the disk cable to IDE1 and you have a way more compatible machine. Before doing that make sure that t...

However WAG locks the machine solid and ...
