puppy 4.1.2 already contains a script called ghostview, all this does is call ps2pdf and then pipe the output to edfview

Using rox filer this is hidden, if you click on a ps file you see it in epdfview. From the prompt just type "ghostview myfile.ps"

Try launching pnethood on the network menu, it may find them for you magically.

Sounds like the file system is corrupt. Depending on the value of the data I would strongly consider backing up the partition with dd before trying to do anything else to it.
