upgradepkg != removepkg + installpkg That procedure won't allow you to update things like tar or xz upgradepkg: 1. first moves the database file for the old package out of the way, 2. then installs the new package, 3. then removes files from the old package which are not in the new package, 4. insta...

The problem lies with getting access to that area of the motherboard. I did see the other day a linux laptop which uses coreboot and claims to have disabled the IME. Here's the article I saw: https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3019569/purism-disables-intels-management-engine-on-linux-powered-...

plus, installpkg will call gz or xz and tar and possibly ln and others from doinst.sh with glibc gone you may not be unable to start *anything* -even statically compiled stuff because your ld-linux.so is gone. I would have thought that you had thought about this situation before. You could maybe avo...

Umm, nature encourages genetic diversity to avoid in-breeding, and to achieve new adaptations. One interesting thing about how pheromones play a part. There are four basic human immunity groups. Best 'results' are when different immuno-groups cross, as offspring have wider resistance. We usually thi...

democracy is much older than 200 years. Once 'we' have conquered then we allow no more conquering? People who live under a presidential system don't believe your parliamentary system is better or right. democracy as you probably define it has been evolving for a long time -sometimes for the better, ...

UDF does no wear-leveling or other flash-friendly operations. For bootablility on the maximum number of machine types and ages, FAT is the best choice. A reliable method for setting up a bootable flash, would be to have a FAT partition for boot only, using a separate partition with a better filesyst...

greengeek, I assume you are acknowledging the priority of rights for the Maori? And rufwoof, you must be referring to the rights of the Kelts who preceded both the Romans and Germanic tribes in what is now Germany? The fact is that not one single person on the Earth can claim to have no immigrants i...

The BIOS is not on any disk at all -it's on the motherboard. Here's a nice exercise for your club: take an extra computer which is working. Take out all the disks and then turn it on -count any beeps you hear or note any warnings. Now, start taking more things out -like the RAM. Then turn the machin...

jamesbond is filling in some details that are often missing when this gets discussed. The obvious sticking point for me, is that any puppy is going to try and automount the thing -probably even if you insert after full bootup. Most DE's will also do that. If you're gonna dd it, then it should not be...

Nothing is getting across by itself. Mounting the drive also does nothing except make it available. mount succeeds because the drive is there. It knows it is there because udev has gotten a message from the kernel which has recognized a 'connect' event. udev will normally create the device file and ...

Yes, package info is best kept in a separate file. With care, this can be formatted as sourceable -just a bunch of variables which need no parsing, etc. list of files included in a package should also be in separate files -and in their own subdir for easy, one-pass grepping to find out which package...

Just remembering that when src2pkg generates a *.desktop file, when none is not present in the sources, it auto-detects some of the categories, like GTK and QT. Since by that time during package creation, src2pkg already knows which packages are needed by this new package, it checks if that includes...
