Subject description: Xenial pup,7.5, 32b iso

I've looked through the discussion forum but cannot find solution I want:
Am wanting to install Xenial Pup,7.5,32b, on an old IBM T43 laptop. However, when I dl'd the file-" devx_xenialpup_7.5.sfs", computer did not recognize it when I wanted to burn image on cd. I do see dl file "xenialpup-7.5-uefi.iso", and wonder whether this old laptop would take a cd image of it?
Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Hallo, tosim.

The direct link for the ISO file at Ibiblio is as follows:-

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-xenial/32/xenialpup-7.5-uefi.iso

.....though I fancy it's probably exactly the same as the one you downloaded. You quite possibly got a 'bad' download. It does happen.

If you want the whole page, with devx, md5sum and so forth, it's here:-

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-xenial/32/

Might be an idea to use the checksum to make sure the d/l is as it should be...

Hope that helps.

Hi tosim,

You want the ISO file. It contains Xenialpup's system files. The devx file only contains applications you need for compiling applications, or if you can't find a small pet for python if an application needs python,

I have a Thinkpad T42, and if I recall correctly Xenialpup ran OK on it. I had to add forcepae to the boot menu. Example,

kernel /xen32/vmlinuz pmedia=ataflash psubdir=xen32 forcepae pfix=fsck

As the T43 also uses a Pentium M processor, you'll have to do the same.

"wonder whether this old laptop would take a cd image of it?" Not sure what you mean. Do you want to run it from a CD? or burn it to a CD in order to install it to the hard-drive.

The T42 could boot from a USB-port. It's easier to make a bootable USB-Stick than a CD. But if the T43 can't boot from a USB-port, how are you planning to burn the CD? What operating systems do you currently have available on that computer? other available computers? What CD burning programs do you intend to use? If under Windows, suggest you install burncdcc. It's one of the few which won't screw things up.

Before you try to boot from a CD, ask for instructions on how to interrupt the boot sequence in order to add "forcepae".

Rather than the stock Xenialpup, may I suggest musher0's remaster which uses a kernel better suited to low spec computers. You'll find it here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=971619#971619. Alternatively, perhaps requiring slightly less computer resources is the Tahrpup you'll find here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=982810#982810.

But frankly, any of the following Puppies are better suited to a computer of that vintage:
Sailor Enceladus' Slacko 5.7.1 (nopae), http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=976794#976794 which was recently updated.
Carolina 1.3 (?may require the nopae boot argument?) http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=656241#656241
or any Precise or Lucid Puppies you'll find on the Projects or Derivatives Sections of the Forum. Add the Palemoon (fork of firefox) you'll find here, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=973676#973676 to obtain a modern browser.

My T43p boots from USB OK.
I don't know why one shouldn't.
Maybe a BIOS update is worth looking at as I tend to use the None-IBM restricted ones so I can use other make parts that were not "approved"???
