(Soved)Puppy Slacko 6.9.9.9 on usb pendrive won'boot

#1 Post by nupogodi »

Hi everybody.I used unetbootin application to burn the iso of puppy slacko 5.7
on a usb pendrive formated as FAT32.I reboot my computer then by pressing F11 i enter the boot menu select to boot from pendrive and instatly appears the following error message:

This is not a bootable disk insert and press a bootable floppy and press any key to try again.

My motherbord is an Asrock 7750VM800

The content of syslinux.cfg bootloader is the following:

Code: Select all

default puppy
display boot.msg
prompt 1
timeout 50

F1 boot.msg
F2 help.msg
F3 help2.msg

label puppy
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd
Any idea would be very appreciated.

Probably needs the boot flag set on the partition that is on the USB flash drive.

If you can get Gparted working by running it in another install of Puppy.
Have the USB flash drive plugged in, but not mounted.
Start Gparted with the USB flash drive as device selected.
Right click on the partition.
Choose manage flags
check the boot option.
Now the partition should be flagged as boot.

A tip about Using Unetbootin.
It does not know about the different boot options for Puppy.

On that syslinux.cfg
Change the

Code: Select all

pmedia=cd
to

Code: Select all

pmedia=usbflash
That tells the boot process you are using Puppy installed on a USB flash drive.

Thank you so much for your interest.I tried the above but the problem remains.I just took a look in ubnfilel.txt file and i found that there are missing files that are not displayed there. Those files exist on the usb pendrive though.Take a look on ubnfilel.txt file please.

Code: Select all

boot.cat
boot.msg
help.msg
help2.msg
initrd.gz
isolinux.bin
logo.16
puppy_slacko_5.7.0.sfs
README.HTM
syslinux.cfg
vmlinuz
There are additional files on the usb that are not displayed on this file.

Does this computer have a UEFI bios?
If yes.
Go into the bios setup and disable secure boot and or enable legacy boot.

If you do something.
You do what?
You see what?

Then you are doing something wrong.
The install on the USB is bad.
Try a delete, re-download of the iso, and reinstall of Slacko 5.7
The USB partition is not flagged as boot.
It is a UEFI bios and secure boot is enabled.

Did you ever have any boot loader installed on the USB that may have changed the USB mbr?

What do you mean by saying that i should instll a bootloader?
I am not saying you should install a boot loader.
I am asking if you ever did install a boot loader?
Maybe you put a different Linux OS on the USB drive and it installed a boot loader.

If the setup on the USB drive is all correct.
Slacko 5.7 is a live Puppy install.
All is there to make it boot.

Any reason you are using Slacko 5.7?
Could try a newer Puppy version.

If you can run Gparted.
Do a check of the USB and the file system on it.
Could be something wrong with it.

I have had a USB drive that was just totally messed up and normal partition and format did not work.

Had to do this to get it back to normal.

Will have to do this from a Running Puppy.

To get the USB flash drive back to a normal partition/format condition do the following things.

To do this the USB flash drive can not be in use. Only accessed. Not booted from. Not being used to run Puppy.
In a console type this code and hit enter.
Important make sure correct drive is selected
(The code of=/dev/sdb sdb is the flash drive, yours could be sdc, sdd, etc.... adjust to match yours)

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M count=1
This will remove all partitions, format, and data from USB flash drive.

Use Gparted to get back to normal setup.
1. Make a partition table:
GParted > Device > Create Partition Table > MS-DOS default.
2. Partition and format as you like.

Hi everybody i managed to solve my problem by taking the following steps:First of all i mounted the .iso file the i renamed all the .sfs files changing their version number according to the version of the slacko puppy i used.Keep this in mind because on the next step i use puppy universal installer and if i don't do that the instalation proccess stops imediately. So after renaming those files as i mentioned above i used puppy universal installer i took all the steps needed and i installed puppy on the usb stick. Before rebooting i took this last step i mounted the stick and renamed all the .sfs files by changing the version numbers according to the version of the .iso of slacko wich i downloaded.I rebooted my computer fro the usb stick and that's it puppy loaded! :D Right now i am posting from the puppy version loaded fror my usb stick.Previously i was user of slacko 6.3.2 and now i use slacko 6.9.9.9 wich i shall install on my hdd. :D

PS I am grateful to those who helped me.

Still wondering why unetbootin did not do a working install.
I have used it many times, however I am running it in Puppy.
Maybe something is wrong with the Windows version.
