Setting default fonts....

Afternoon, all.

Coupla quick questions for y'all, boys & girls. I've been perusing, and downloading, different fonts again; I shall eventually end up with a collection of 'em that I actually want to keep. Trouble is, very often they look totally different in use than what they do on the web-site's display panels.....

How do you set the default font you want Pup to use for everything (the 'global' font)? I know you place these in /usr/share/fonts.....oh, that leads me to another question, one I've never been too sure about. Which of those directories inside the 'default' one do you use; TTF, or Truetype?

The settings are in several places.

The Font Manager has some control over fonts.
In Xenialpup you access Font Manager by menu>Desktop>JWMdesk Manager>Desktop>Screen Font
A lot of stuff can be done using this program.

menu>Desktop>JWMdesk Manager>Desktop>GTK Theme>Font button should give you option for what font to use with the selected theme.

In Rox file manager>options>pinboard
You can control the font used for icons on the desktop.

TTF fonts should go into /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF

Thanks, bigpup. That's what I thought about the fonts location, although I wasn't certain.

As for different places where you adjust fonts from, yeah; I'm well aware that these are rather scattered all over the place. Just as a point of interest, would you know where the font control for ROX-filer itself happens to reside? I've discovered this wonderful new 'modern' font, called Exo 2, which I'd love to get working right throughout Puppy if I can. I've reset Chrome, and got it working nicely on the pinboard, and in Leafpad; are we talking about the GTK theme chooser setting you mentioned?

EDIT:- Yep, you were right; that's how you get the font looking different in ROX itself.....because it's a GTK app, isn't it?

Nice font. Passes the key test for me: lowercase "L", numeral "1", and uppercase "I" are all distinct. I have two minor quibbles:
a) the uppercase "G" looks quite odd without a crossbar, and
b) the descender of the uppercase "Q" isn't attached to the main body of the letter. In closely spaced lines of text it might be mistaken for an accent mark on a vowel in the line below.

After you've copied a new TTF font there, do not forget to reinitalize the font
cache by typing, in console:

fc-cache -r

The "-r" setting means "really" reinitialize the cache. (I'm not kidding! It's in
the doc!) Otherwise, the GTK font dialog won't show it.

Glad you like it! Granted, there are a few 'peculiarities', but I'm prepared to overlook 'em, because it's such an attractive font; very easy on the eye, and extremely clear, too; very easy to read. The screenie doesn't really do it justice.....and; ah, hell - I admit it! - I have a bit of a 'thing' about italic fonts in general, though I've not found many I could live with full-time. This one, I think I could.....

Time will tell.

Nice font find, Mike - I really like it and am going to run with it for a while. I'm always on the lookout for alternate fonts that are organic/natural, balanced, easy-on-the-eyes and "classy" - yet a with a hint of modern flair... this one definitely fits! It has a bit of Eurostile's modern "sharpness", but not as extreme and more balanced in width/spacing/weight. Really nice.

Locate the new font.
Have it showing in the selection slot.
Click on install font(S) button.

I think it does the above for you.

Ah, I'm pleased you like it, mate. You feel the need for a change, occasionally, don't you? I'd attempted to do this a while ago, but couldn't figure out quite how you changed it system-wide for most apps 'n'stuff, and it wasn't really that important, so.....I let it be.

I'm not entirely certain what started me off searching for fonts the other night, but once I got the bit between my teeth, I just kept going. I must have searched half-a-dozen sites before I came across this one.....and, trying it out in the 'demo' field on the site, I thought to myself, 'Y'know, I really like this...'

The requirement for fonts, in my eyes, are that they be:-

1.) Attractive to look at.
2.) Easy on the eye; clear, well-defined, and something you can just 'live with'.
3.) As tlchost says, being able to distinguish between lower-case 'L', upper-case 'i', and '1' is an important consideration. Some of the more well-known ones simply don't cut it, here, so.....another plus point.

(The one I've used for some time on my desktop background designs, which is called TrSahDungeon, is a sweet, somewhat 'futuristic-looking' design; great on the desktop, for titles and such-like.....but I wouldn't want to use it on a daily basis. That would be too much like hard work; below a certain font size, it becomes hard to read if you're scanning summat quickly.

I've also found a variation on the original 'BladeRunner' title-sequence and bill-poster font, which I will be trying out for background titles...)

I've been using DejaVu Sans ever since coming to Puppy a few years ago. I'd used it in Ubuntu, where it is of course the default one that comes with the system; it was such a revelation after years of Tahoma & Times New Roman in XP!

But even DejaVu Sans becomes time-worn, and 'boring'. A new font revitalises things, and makes everything interesting again. I shall in all likelihood stick with this for quite a while.....especially given that it has so many variations (14 in all, I believe.) And since it responds well to italics, even under WINE, well.....

I like it, I like it..!

Can't remember specifically, musher0, but a quick search for 'Exo2 font download' on DuckDuckGo gives scores of results. Try this one, for instance:-

One font included in my spin is 'overpass' (reminiscent of the USA Inteerstate Highway font)

For clarity Liberation mono (my default FF27 font)
