How to read LS-120 SuperDisk?

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Not too many people ever used LS-120 drives with Puppy, but it was suppose to be supported in the early days of Puppy.
Try one of the older versions of Puppy.
Puppy 4.3.1
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/
Lucid 5.2.8-005
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-5.2.8/
Precise 5.7.1
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/precise-5.7.1/

Try these on your oldest computer.

They may not support the newer computers hardware.
Hard to support hardware that was not present, when these versions of Puppy where made.

This could be needing to use a newer version of Puppy that will fully support that adapter you use.
Xenialpup 7.5

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Imart, have you read this thread?

Maybe you could take the drive to someplace that has Apple computers for sale and ask them to try to read it. At least that might tell you how it's formatted.

You say that Puppy recognizes the drive but won't mount it? I assume you mean that a drive icon shows up on your desktop when you plug the drive in (With a disk in the drive. Linux reads filesystems and if there's no formatted media in the drive, there's nothing for Puppy to mount or to read.) If that's the case, what does the popup window say when you rest your cursor on the drive icon?

i
is this drive formatted for HFS Plus or HFS+ ?
If this is the problem, the format of the disk.
Probably need to add the stuff to support that format.

In Puppy Xenialpup 7.5
in the Puppy Package Manager(PPM)
First do a update of the database. Configure>Update Database.
Do a search for HFS+
There will be listed, needed stuff to download and install, to provide the support needed for this format.

rockedge, thanks ... No idea how it's formatted
In Puppy you can run Gparted and select this drive as the device to look at.
Gparted should be able to tell you what format it is.

Definitley try to run GParted and see if the drive is read and if it does how is it formatted?

assuming the drive is formatted as HFS+, open the puppy package manager
and install hfsprogs_332.25

then try to mount it if you can identify what the drive is named.

Code: Select all

mount -t hfsplus -o force,rw /dev/xxxx /myMountPoint
this is all theoretical and I can't test it, I do not have a HFS+ drive on hand.

Thanks All,
I make a point of replying to each and every post. However, several of my replies to posts are not showing.

Downloaded/verified checksum/created LiveCD of xenialpup-7.5-uefi
Please see 3 attached screenshots

Booted LiveCD, inserted Ls-120 USB, ran lsusb; drive recognized, disk drive blinked for a few seconds then stopped, inserted LS-120 disk into drive, disk drive kept blinking, powered down everything.

Booted LiveCD, inserted Ls-120 USB, ran lsusb; drive recognized, disk drive blinked for a few seconds then stopped, launched PPM to update database; see capture3.

What are your suggestions to move foreward?
Thanks.

Have the drive plugged in when you boot up the Live CD.
When you get to a working desktop.
Insert a LS-120 disk into drive.
Hopefully a drive icon will show on desktop for the drive. It will be identified with a name.

Start the program Gparted and select the LS-120 drive as the device to look at.
Hopefully it will show what the format of the disk is.
If it does show the disk format.
What is it?

Thanks,

Yes - Have the drive plugged in when you boot up the Live CD.
Yes - When you get to a working desktop, insert a LS-120 disk into drive. Unwrapped a new disk and inserted into drive.
No - Hopefully a drive icon will show on desktop for the drive. It will be identified with a name.

Gparted cannot find - Start the program Gparted and select the LS-120 drive as the device to look at.
Unable to determine disk format

lsusb identifies the device

? next steps ?

A new disk is probably not formatted. In other words, it has no filesystem for either Gparted or Puppy Linux to recognize. What happens if you put one of the disks that you know contains something in the drive? What do Gparted or Puppy say then?

Thanks, Flash.

#1 The LS-120 disk is formatted by Imation. Secondly, every disk inserted into the drive behaves the same; they hang.
This makes me wonder; if lsusb recognizes the device, perhaps the appropriate driver(s) are not installed, for both the E-USB device and the drive. If all appropriate drivers installed, then it seems to be a matter of properly mounting the drive, then see if it is possible to r/w.

#2, I tried to edit my posts ... but they are not there. No idea what happened.
