Opera 55 sfs for 64-bit Tahrpup?
Hi. Does anyone have an .sfs for Opera 55? A direct install from Opera is broken. Won't run anything. This machine uses Tahrpup 6.0.5, 64-bit. Thanks.
Hi Jeffneedle,
Opera 55 was released on July 12, 2018. For more than a year, Opera has been a repackaging of Chromium (the "test build" for Google-Chrome without some of Google-Chrome's "Call home" features). For more than a year, Google-Chrome and its clones and variants have been built not to "run as root". Since about November 2017, Puppy Devs have not been able to circumvent that limitation. Consequently all current Chrome & Clones and variants have been built to "run as Spot". AFAIK, no one has constructed a more recent Opera than is discussed on this thread: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 395#878395.
You might want to give OscarTalk's Iron a try. You'll find versions 58 and 63 here: https://yadi.sk/d/_S5b4g7tpcyZn. I think only Slackos require the libconfig pet also found there. It's not needed under Tahrpup or Xenialpup.
One of the things I liked about opera was its speed dial. There's an extension named Speed Dial 2 New Tab which works very well under Chrome and Clones to provide that interface.

Hi Jeff,
Even if there were a current opera you could use, or you continued to use your old version, unfortunately you will soon have to find another method of using VPN. Techradar. citing an announcement in April (link to which is broken) reported that Opera intended to shut down its VPN. https://www.techradar.com/news/opera-vp ... ternatives
The above posts suggests four alternatives. But there are a great many more; some are standalone. But google's playstore shows many which are browser extensions.

I'm afraid I don't do much with 64bit Puppies or browsers and Opera was never a personal favourite anyway.
What I can tell you is that latest 64bit Opera will be based on a very recent Chromium and it may not be easy to get it to run in Tahr. You will need libgtk-3 of course and probably an NSS upgrade (can be done via a palemoon upgrade and lauching with a script) and maybe some other libraries as well. Without experimenting I am not sure what would be needed and if it is possible. An upgrade to Xenial64 would help in some respects, but some tinkering would still probably be needed.
For a system VPN which is free and will work with all browsers (for basic use) I have a thread here which may be of help:-

I have now had a chance to test this.
opera-55.0.2994.61-amd64.sfs
This package works in Tahr64 6.0.5
If you do the following steps:-
Install libgtk-3 via PPM
Upgrade Palemoon to latest version (28.0.1) by extracting the tarball into /opt
Download the Opera .sfs and load it
https://yadi.sk/d/kbkFDOa3pGaxF?force_show=1
Notes:-
Opera is running as root with no sandbox.
VPN option is in the preferences (tested - worked).
Runs in Xenial64 out of the box.
