kiramm:

Sorry for not responding earlier, I apparently don't get emails from this forum anymore. I'll try to figure out why I don't. (On a side note, do other people get emails still?)

It appears that Windows is using hybrid boot, which basically turns "shutdown" into "hibernate", which explains the messages you're getting. This is done to make Windows startup faster, at the cost of leaving the Windows partition in an unstable state (which is why the save file isn't read). The odd thing is that LICK is supposed to disable fastboot.

There's three ways to disable fastboot, only one of which is currently implemented in LICK. The first is an option in the control panel, which LICK should disable through a command on the command line. Try following those instructions, and let me know if the checkbox was checked, and if the steps help at all. To test this, you need to go to "shut down" in Windows, then boot up a puppy.

The second way is through the registry, which currently isn't implemented in LICK (since this issue has never come up before I didn't do implement it, but if this fixes things, I'll prioritise implementing this). Anyway, the instructions can be found here. Follow the instructions to disable fast boot. Let me know if this fixes things.

Finally, LICK does the other step the second link above, disabling hibernation. You can try this and see if it helps.

Let me know if any of the above steps fixes the issue, and if so, which step.

Finally, if none of the steps above work, go into Windows, select "reboot", then boot into puppy. I don't think hybrid boot changes reboot at all, so it may be a good workaround.

SUMMERY

if i understand all this well

if lick not make puppy workig properly

if all disabling in blue screen sometimes still not enough
to get puppy run correct
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipO ... I0MkJkZl9n

(

(one does not need to search for f2or fx to get to blue screen at start
one can this do also i win:))) wau...
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disa ... st-startup

happy that Puppy Linux team in Hungary yet has an assistance to people needing some help. Hungary is an nice Puppyland.Where Puppies grow fast and well

LICK is a free program to install Linux from Windows without burning a CD or using a USB. It is as simple as installing and running LICK, selecting a Linux ISO image, and clicking install. A few seconds later, you can reboot into Linux. Currently only Puppy Linux-based distributions are supported.

LICK runs on any Windows version, from Windows 95 to Windows 10. Check below for any special notes on your Windows version type.

Ready for use LICK.exe are provided,

#486 Post by hamoudoudou »

Ready for use LICK.exe are provided, but personally set my own Puppy to be launched. First try was the famous 5.7.1 rebuild by csipesz,
It was to try this too, by curiosity. My CD player and 4 USB ports are still available. In native Puppy Linux spirit, i don't install any OS on hard drive, and keep Windows Seven alive, for sale of my computer in the future. Linux frighten most of buyers, our Puppy Linux, which power is often in bad hands,

LICK 1.3.1 has been released. This fixes Windows 95 support, and removes some random `static` keywords in lickgrub.cfg, making the grub4dos timeout work again as expected.

As always, you can download it from here.

Hello,
LICK is at this point by FAR the easiest way to add puppy support to win10 systems.
Thanks for your great work.

A feature that I would like is the option to just install the LICK bootloader without specifying an ISO. Just add the boot entry to BCD menu and add the lickgrub.cfg in C: . \
This will allow to install frugal systems more quickly and not to have to delete the "live" folder and then copy the frugal folder.

I know this seems a bit lazy from me but this little extra time I spend deleting the "live" folder from C: seems to add more complexity to the the non trained eye (=my friends where I "advertise" puppy as easy to install :) )

thanks trister..edit lickgrub.cfg did it,simple.
edit: realized that once lick is installed,
installing frugal is as usual:create a folder,expand iso,copy initrd-vmlinuz-puppy_whatever.sfs-zdrv_whatever.sfs,edit lickgrub.cfg ,reboot...
you can also boot live.iso,example:
menuentry "Ubuntu beaver ISO" {
set isofile="/ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso"
# or set isofile="/<username>/Downloads/ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso"
# if you use a single partition for your $HOME
loopback loop (hd0,4)$isofile
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=$isofile noprompt noeject
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

trister: I didn't get an email notifying me of your message :? Anyway, there is already a way to install the boot loader and make an empty grub config: File -> "Install/Uninstall Bootloader". Is this what you are looking for?

Hello
I think I have messed something up. I just installed lick on a acer b113 running win 10 pro, I tried to install xenial64-7.5 iso and on reboot I missed next step. linkgrub.cfg was on c: drive but I wasn't given any choice of operating system to use. Has anyone any ideas please.
Thanks

Sorry for the delay in replying, I'm still not getting email notifications for posts.

What happens when you reboot? Does it go into Windows or xenialpup?

If it goes into Windows, you can try using Help -> "Nothing happens on reboot" button in the lick GUI.

It goes straight in to win10, no mention of xenialpup although the lickgrub.cfg is in drive C:.( I did install xenialpup to drive d:)
Nice little program lick it installed xenialpup with win7 on another laptop no trouble, thanks.
I have a boot usb for win10.

1) Did you try going to Help -> "Nothing happens on reboot" button in the lick GUI? What happened when you restarted?

2) If the above doesn't work, try entering the UEFI when you reboot. In these menus, do you see a boot order selection? Does LICK show up there? If you see it, can you try booting it from there?

Problem is I don't think I am on uefi I was on bios when I installed win10. There is an entry for lickgrub.cfg on drive C:
insmod part_gpt
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs

set timeout=5
set default=0

insmod all_video
if loadfont /grub/fonts/unicode.pf2 ; then
set gfxmode=auto
set gfxpayload=keep
terminal_output gfxterm
fi

menuentry "Windows" {
insmod chain
search --set=root --file /EFI/Microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi
chainloader /EFI/Microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi
}
## end header

## start section xenialpup64-7.5-uefi
menuentry 'xenialpup64 7.5 uefi' {
search --set=root --file /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/vmlinuz
linux /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/vmlinuz pfix=fsck psubdir=xenialpup64-7.5-uefi
initrd /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/initrd.gz
}

menuentry 'xenialpup64 7.5 uefi (no save file)' {
search --set=root --file /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/vmlinuz
linux /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/vmlinuz pfix=ram savefile=none psubdir=xenialpup64-7.5-uefi
initrd /xenialpup64-7.5-uefi/initrd.gz
}
## end section xenialpup64-7.5-uefi
Is this any help

1) Have you tried using "Help" -> "Nothing happens on reboot" yet?

2) Can you use this article to check if you have BIOS or UEFI? I think lick would have given an error message if you did have BIOS, so that is somewhat concerning.

1) I tried help but it said it was risky and I do not have a backup of my efi drive so did not go ahead.
2) It says it is using uefi.
I have the win10 on usb that I loaded from.

1) If you reboot and go into your UEFI, find your boot order option. Do you see LICK anywhere in the list? If so, try moving that to the top and reboot.

2) Based on you having a Windows 10 boot usb, it should be fine for you to use the tool. If things go wrong, you can use your Windows 10 boot usb to restore the partition, as explained here.

3) If those don't work, open an administrator cmd and paste the output of

Code: Select all

bcdedit /enum all

I can't get in to uefi bios options, I get as far as uefi firmware settings, restart to change uefi firmware settings, it restarts and goes into legacy bios. I have it set to legacy mode and win10 was installed legacy.
