X fails when Thunderbird is un-installed in Tahrpup-6.0.5

#1 Post by Sky Aisling »

Hello,

Machine: HP HDX Premium Series 4gb RAM
Distro: Tahrpup-6.0.5 (64bit)

All was well with the system. No issues at all.
But, I decided Thunderbird was taking up too much space and was becoming annoying.
I deleted the TB .cache and checked space, still too much.
So, I un-installed TB using Puppy Package Manager.
I rebooted the system.
This error message shows:
Puppypc xxxxx login root (auto)
Starting X, specs in/etc/x11/org.conf,
start up apps /root/.xinitvc/.,
Excited from X
Type 'xwin [fvwm95|jwm' to restart X ([ ] mean optional)
If X failed to start, type 'orgwizard' to set up X.

I followed the recovery instructions.
Screen then showed cursor for a moment then looped back to the above messages.

I fortunately had several old backup files from months past that ran Thunderbird.
I loaded a backup and it brought up X with no issues.
So, I experimented and un-installed Thunderbird and rebooted.
No joy, the same error message presented.
I had a bunch of saved backups and tried the test on another backup with the same negative results.

The saved files look intact otherwise, just can't get X to show up after un-installing TB and rebooting.

Running in RAM mode brings up X with no issues except no sound.

Any insights or suggestions are appreciated.

Stop messing up the backups!
Type 'xwin [fvwm95|jwm' to restart X ([ ] mean optional)
If X failed to start, type 'orgwizard' to set up X.

I followed the recovery instructions.
Screen then showed cursor for a moment then looped back to the above messages.
Did you type xwin or run xorgwizard or do both?

Boot in ram mode not using the save.
In file manager left click on the save to open it.
Navigate to /etc/X11
Delete everything in it.
This should remove all the xorg settings in the save.

Try booting using the save.
Any help?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Yes

Boot in ram mode not using the save.
Yes
In file manager left click on the save to open it.
I opened a save file that I hadn't messed with
Navigate to /etc/X11
Yes
Delete everything in it.
Yes
This should remove all the xorg settings in the save.
Yes

Try booting using the save.
This was confusing. I 'saved' on close down. But, what did it save? The RAM view or the contents of the old save file? I named the shutdown save file a different name than the original old backup. Then booted up with the RAM saved file. No joy.
How else would I modify and save a file that did not initiate at bootup time because the system was in RAM mode?

Any help?
Well, yes, I got the sound back on the system.

I am thinking it is time to upgrade to the next Debian Pup, the one that starts with an 'X' and has a squirell on the logo. Maybe that will be luckier. I'll just loose my desktop setup and tons of bookmarks, but, hey, that will give me something to do this winter.

I wanted you to delete from one of the messed up saves.
Do not make a new save on shutdown.
Boot now using the messed up save that you deleted everything from /etc/X11 inside the save.

The save has nothing in /etc/X11 when you boot using it.
Loose tons of bookmarks
Bookmarks in what?
Most bookmarks are in a file that can be copied and saved, but each program is different as to location of this file.

The save has nothing in /etc/X11 when you boot using it.
Note: I am running under a new save made quickly from a RAM only bootup in order to get a desktop in order to modify an old messed up save stored in sda1 frugal folder.

I cleaned out /etc/X11 on old messed up save.
Rebooted without saving.
No joy.

Bookmarks? Palemoon is broken also. PM doesn't activate from .desktop or .bin or any other place I can locate PM. I had to download and unzip a 27.9 Palemoon and run it from .bin. But, no sound or ability to play videos with 27.9. So, Palemoon is messed up too, but, I'll have to deal with that later.

Thank you, bigpup

Hello bigpup

Well, I have a partial success with your suggestion.
I tried modifying another save file per your instructions above.
I have sound back.
The pinboard is not recovered, but, that doesn't matter right now.
Games such as Frozen Bubble are gone. (that matters  )
Palemoon 25.8.1 is wobbly. Sometimes it will initiate other times not. A 'retry' does connect. The Palemoon menu updater won't pull up the most current version of PM. Sometimes PM won't play video because of HTML5 issue, but, then it will play the same video if I leave the video then come back to it.

I'm beginning to wonder if there might be a hardware issue with this machine. Last week twice when I fired up the box early in the am when it was a little chilly in the house, there was a screeching sound. The noise sounded like a belt slipping on a car pulley. Hard drive issue maybe?

Thank you for hanging in here with me. We've had a family emergency and email communication and internet research was needed. So, having the box go down was a bother. I'll work on the Palemoon issue in another thread.

Sure could be a hard drive going bad.
The hard drive internal disks have to start spinning up to 5,400 or 7,200 RPM.
Fans usually just get very slow or stop working.

Hello bigpup,

Your suggestion got Tahrpup back up and running but I am still struggling to get Palemoon recovered as many tahrpup apps use PM.

Here is the thread I posted about Palemoon.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 58#1010358

I am using Slimjet right now and like it, but, it says it can't determine if it is the default browser or not. So, looks like Palemoon still needs to be included.
