Rudy Edition: slimming it down? Subject description: Rudy Edition is a big dog i need to trim fat without crippling How To? |
|
I am posting a lot today but while trying to learn to use puppy i have nagging questions and the time today to seek answers.
My Rudy Edition installs are huge but it just has almost everything i want right out the box.
But some things i don't and probably will never need. Any suggestions on how to uninstall
some things without crippling the distro?

I will make a list of what i will not use and see if you can help me uninstall and still have a healthy puppy.

Rudy Edition: slimming it down? Subject description: Downloaded the 070227 version, based on Puppy Linux 2.14 need to remove some programs. |
|
debernardis,
I Downloaded the 070227 version of Rudy Edition based on Puppy Linux 2.14 and it is sweet but i need to remove some programs.
I will begin with the Utilities menu:
Xcalc
Ycalc
Gbase
the Science menu:
Rlplot
Easychem
MedAsq
the Games menu:
All
Any ideas on safe removal?
I am glad that Xsane scanner frontend, Xpdq printer management and Cups printer management are in place.
I will add Gtkam for my Canon a510 camera as i got it to work with Gtkam in Grafpup.
Cups worked in Grafpup with my HP Photosmart 7350 printer after i downloaded a ppd file from the linuxprinting.org website.
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi
I will probably add Opera and Mplayer like I did in the last Rudy Edition.
You do great work and i hate to dissect it. Hope you don't mind.
Lobster
I will try Pupbegone this weekend
Thanks

You won't be saving a significant space by erasing those you listed:
Code: | sh-3.00# du -h /usr/X11R7/bin/xcalc
23K /usr/X11R7/bin/xcalc
sh-3.00# du -h /usr/local/bin/ycalc
37K /usr/local/bin/ycalc
sh-3.00# du -h /usr/local/bin/gbase
15K /usr/local/bin/gbase
sh-3.00# du -h /usr/local/rlplot-1.2/
2.2M /usr/local/rlplot-1.2/
sh-3.00# du -h /usr/local/easychem-0.6/
564K /usr/local/easychem-0.6/
sh-3.00#

Excluding games, less then 3 megs. MedASq is only a menu voice calling an url. Games are tiny, too: xaos is 201 kbytes, xgammon 45 kbytes, bubbles 45k, gtkfish 78k and so on.
The biggies are openoffice.org (almost 240 megs), java (almost 84 megs), skype (almost 17 megs), R (58 megs), wine (almost 80 megs).
Gdmap is your friend... try gdmap -f /usr , gdmap -f /usr/local , gdmap -f /usr/lib .
You can inspect the whole filesystem with gdmap to see what's bloat.

Yes but the thing I like in Skype is that it punches holes in firewalls... you can use it also when ports are closed. Does Gizmo work the same?

Rudy Edition: slimming it down? Subject description: Rudy Edition: slimming it down? First attempt using pupbegone. |

I downloaded pupbegone-v1.5.pet.
http://www.browserloadofcoolness.com/software/puppy/PETget/pupbegone-1.5.pet
I read the post http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=850964992&t=3982
and did the install on Rudy Edition 070227 version, based on Puppy Linux 2.14
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/RudyPuppy
The message popups said it would be in menu under Setup and i needed the 0pkgs_db file and that 0pkgs_db would be qued for download.
After a JWM restart, X restart and even Reboot computer I did not see pupbegone in the Setup menu. I finally located it in Add-ons-XDG menus-Setup which is a Rudy Edition 070227 version thing i believe.
I tried twice to uninstall OpenOffice but no go.
A dependency check says pupbegone is okay but i am going to look at the 0pkgs_db file and try again.
debernardis:
You are right. Gdmap is an eyeopener.
gekko:
You know Rudy Edition 070227 version comes with both Skype and Xtensoftphone SIP phone client installed. I played a while with Xten last night but got a Proxy does not resolve error. I will hook it up to Gizmo later and try it again.
I am thinking to carry the big apps on an sd card or flash drive as install on demand.
Thanks
