Warning! This may be hardware dependent and I haven't repeated (and will not) repeat it. I swapped the 4.20 kernel into a smoothly running lxpupsc64, version 18.06 +14 with the 4.19.10 kernel in my experimental directory. Update of the cleaned and fsck'd savefile, boot, tests all normal, video FPS down a bit but not much. Used it a bit, saved to savefile from my menu save2flash, all ok. I rebooted and it quite fubarred my BIOS! Black screen partway through the normal post X messages at shutdown and No video at all on startup. Tried a couple of startups from complete power off state, no Fujitsu splash screen or Grub4Dos menu etc. I then just let it sit and it did wait for the default time and booted into upupbb, my default pup, albeit with completely goofy video res. Rebooted from there, same. Shut down, power up, still no video on startup. I did a power button shut down, pulled battery etc., still no display on startup. Finally got to the bios setup screen with F2 on multiple starts and changed a couple of things, video internal flatpanel instead of auto.... and saved the settings to a shutdown. I did not have to reset the whole bios to defaults. Next poweron everything is back to normal. I'm back in lxpupsc64 with the 4.19.10 kernel at the moment and WILL NOT, WILL NOT run 4.20.0 again, at least on this series of lappies.

Just a note. This laptop is rock stable on all pups and at all times. Never a squawk out of it. The ONLY change was the 4.20 kernel in a previously very stable 64b pup. Quite a switch from my usual 'issueless' posts. No lectures needed on testing new stuff, someone has to do it and I enjoy it as a rule and some problems are to be expected, just not of this magnitude.

Here's the hardware:

Code: Select all

System: Host: puppypc16298 Kernel: 4.19.10-lxpup64 x86_64 (64 bit)

Edit: I just excised 4.20 from that exact experimental install (and the savefile) and swapped in the 4.19.11 64b kernel. Nice happy boot, video FPS back to what I had been seeing in 4.19.10 and previous, and shutdowns and reboots completely normal. e2fsck checked on the savefile before the reboot and test and it found no problems there.

I donno, I thought about trying it on one of my second tier machines (core 2 duo or Bay Trail) but I don't have any real sacrificial goats at this point so I think I will stick with 4.19.11 64b on the slacko derivs and let 4.20 go through a few iterations and a bit of time and then possibly try it again. I did manage a recovery after all. I use the 4.9.134 32b on all the ubuntu derivs and quite like it so no problems there. It's been a number of decades since I've seen anything that dramatic. Sorry if my post came off as flapped, I was :) I'm running the recovered lxpup64 with the 4.19.11, up after an several reboots and an overnight lidsuspend on that exact hardware, and it seems solid as always.

Cheers,

Just pondering: Mostly seems the video was affected since I could boot blind, though very odd that it stayed so through a hard power off and power on. Lots of patches to the i915 DRM in the 4.20 kernel to bring intel PPGTT into the kernel (47 I believe) for ivy bridge, haswell and some other CPUs. My 2nd generation i5 is an ivy bridge class cpu with intel HD graphics. Revolverves Motion R12 has a haswell Y chip with intel HD 4200 graphics I believe. peebee, what does your Asus and Dell have for video? If I get bold and retry it will be on the Bay Trail desktop as hardware resetting the bios is much easier on that than on the laptops.

Update: CMOS jumper in left hand, coffee cup in right, I did exactly the same install as above to the Bay Trail desktop:

Code: Select all

No problems seen there through several save/shutdown/reboot cycles. Bounced back and forth from the lxpupsc64 with the 4.19.11 kernel install and the lxpupsc64 with the 4.20.0 kernel install to check dmesg/video FPS etc. No odd behavior seen, video or bios. The video FPS hit going from 4.19.11 to 4.20.0 is less than on the i5, 6% vs 8%, but easily quantified. Mitigation unchanged, Dmesg no cleaner nor dirtier, So, no problems seen in this short test on the Bay Trail hardware but no reason to switch either so I'll sit on the kernel sidelines for a bit as planned.

LxPupSc-19.01+0-uefi-T-k64

#1085 Post by peebee »

LxPupSc-19.01+0-uefi-T-k64 is a 32-bit woof-ce 'testing' branch build with a 64-bit kernel (therefore only compatible with 64-bit capable processors)

LxPupSc-19.01+0-uefi-T-k64.iso {devx} - (devx does not include kernel sources or headers) {kernel 4.19.13-lxpup64 sources}

iso md5 = 6170f756b6087d67ba2f42bd23abe7ff

Interim delta updates and newer kernels may be available.

Delta from 18.12T is available

- kernel 4.19.13 64-bit built with GCC-8.2.0
(alternative 32-bit kernels 3.16.x 4.4.x 4.9.x & 4.14.x also available - all need firmware in the fdrv)
- Made from Slackware-Current as of Mon Dec 31 21:33:54 UTC 2018
- BUILD_FROM_WOOF='testing;7861abba;2018-12-31 00:59:24 +0800'
- web browser in adrv is light-48.0
- firmware is in fdrv
- alternative fall-back xorg is in ydrv (no need to install unless needed)

**N.B. the 64-bit kernel means that any kernel drivers have to be built in a true 64-bit system - LxPupSc64 with it's own devx is suggested but use the kernel sources above

Woof-CE build repository is: http://smokey01.com/peebee/slackocurrent/

Chromium, Firefox, Palemoon and Seamonkey are in the repository and installable via Internet -> Get Web Browser

The versions of the browsers as of 01-jan-2019 with their md5sums are:
chromium_71.0.3578.80+pepper_32.0.0.101 RUN-AS-SPOT :fb47c1ab1a3a6b507a94fe27ba9ebcdb

LxPupSc-19.01+0-uefi-T-k64 installed to the Fujitsu S761 i5 laptop at the same time I installed LxPupSc64-19.01+0-uefi-T-k64. Details on that thread but basically no issues found with this either. As with the 64b LxPupSc, a day or so of off and on use without any problems. Posting from the 32b now running Slimjet 21.0.3.0 run-as-spot from SFS.

Update Jan 07: A few more days on this, normal daily use, no problems at all noted. One kernel 'quirk' unlikely to affect many, noted here

Kernel Release: 4.20.1-lxpup64

#1088 Post by Marv »

Back in the saddle here. Ran 4.20.0 one more time on the same i5 laptop in LxPupSc 19.01 just to see. Yep, it locked up the video tight on shutdown. Pulled battery and powercord, Held powerbutton for 10 secs, and got it back to life. Swapped 4.20.1 in, first into LxPupSc 19.01, then into LxPupSc64 19.01. Six or more reboots on each, some suspends and use in between. No lockups or distorted video on any reboot. Dmesg ok on both, CPU use and mem use at idle also exactly as expected. I still see the video FPS hit I mentioned above compared to the 4.19 series or 4.14.91 on LxPupSc and 4.14.55 on LxPupSc64. Overall performance seems fine. My feeling is that for this class of machines (circa 2012 IIRC) the current 4.14.xx kernels are the sweet spot with what, 2 yrs support left? That said, 4.20.1 seems solid again.

Delta to 19.01+1 applied and quickly tested on the Fujitsu S761. md5sum of generated iso correct, pristine frugal Grub4Dos and 19.01 update. The updated 19.01 runs the 4.20.1 kernel at this time. Normal clean boots and usual system checks. Primarily tested evince on the two stinky service manuals, 150 Mb and 178 Mb. No evince error messages in dmesg. I don't use Light, load Slimjet from SFS instead, so no tests there.

Kernel checks: The 4.20.2-lxpup64 run for about 4 days then the 4.20.3-lxpup64 run for a day or two on my Fujitsu S761 i5 based laptop in both LxPupSc 19.01 +1 and LxPupSc64 19.01 +1. Frugal Grub4Dos installs in both, kernel swapped in for stock. In both kernels and both pups, no changes observed from 4.20.1. CPU and mem use at idle, dmesg cleanliness, video FPS, mitigation, and overall boot and run behavior in daily use all good. No heart-stopping video oddities on shutdown/reboot. The video FPS on this hardware continues to be below that observed when running the 4.9.134 32b or 4.14.55 64b kernels by roughly 5 to 7%. Measurable but not awful, and probably due to the i915 driver/hardware match on these 2012 era machines.

GetFlash

#1095 Post by TLM »

Working good here. Only thing I see is that GetFlash 1.71 fetches the 64 bit version of flashplayer and fails to install it. Need the 32 bit anyway. Probably a script change in getflash or the conf would fix it. Not that savvy, but I manage to avoid using Windows. Great job on this version. Brother DCP-J152W printer and scanner work using deb linux drivers from Brother's website. 32 bit Firefox 64.02 installed and working great. Thanks again.

Ahh - that's probably because LxPupSc has a 64-bit kernel.....hmmm not sure what to do about that - may just have to direct to the Flashplayer download page rather than ppm and getflash.....

Kernel Release: 4.20.4-lxpup64

#1097 Post by Marv »

Two days runtime on the 4.20.4-lxpup64 kernel. All in LxPupSc 19.01.1 on the i5 based Fujitsu S761, frugal Grub4Dos install. As with 4.20.2 and 4.20.3, all system and dmesg checks, boots, idle CPU % and idle mem use, and mitigation basically excellent and unchanged from 4.20.1. As in the tests of 4.20.2 and 4.20.3 I have no untoward effects wrt video or bios on shutdown. Video performance is inching back up a bit with each sucessive version since the measurable drop noted with 4.20.0. Not an issue and I'm not bothering to quantify it. i915 driver tweaks?

Basically completely usable on this hardware with LxPupSc 19.01.1. Daily use involves Sylpheed and Slimjet, flash weather animation, a few simple car related youtubes, some simple text editing, lots of downloads and printing, PDF handling, simple calculator flogging, and a bit of spreadsheet work. External drives mounted and unmounted repeatedly to back up ongoing work, both USB3 stick and external USB3 connected SSDs.

Took my newest and roughest S761 i5 running 4.20.3 on 19.01 +1 to a weather dictated hotel overnight/medical appointment. Flawless connection where my wifes android tablet bobbled it. Puppy has come a long way in that respect since the days of yore :)

I am going to use an LxPupSc install as the kernel testbed and not do LxPupSc64 for a bit partly just to get more consistent runtime and partly because running ..64 I miss a few must-have 32 bit apps so I tend not to use it as much.

Cheers,

Kernel Release: 4.20.5-lxpup64

#1100 Post by Marv »

System checks per 2 posts up of the 4.20.5-lxpup64 kernel on the second gen i5 laptop. No problems or changes noted, video FPS now on par with the 4.14 and 4.9.x series kernels I run. 4 days or so runtime in LxPupSC 19.01 +2 and system checks and a bit of runtime in LxPup64 19.01 +3. All good so far.
