How to set up usb wireless card in Xenialpup 7.5?

#1 Post by Scott99 »

Hello, I am running a Panasonic CF-29 and dual booting Windows 7 and Xenialpup 7.5. I just upgraded to a gigabit Internet connection and bought a new Raylink usb adapter to take advantage of the faster speed. The adapter came with windows and Linux drivers. The windows driver was easy to install and I have the adapter runs well. The Linux driver came without intelligible, at least for me, installation instructions and despite a number of Google searches I've gotten nowhere. The driver needs to be installed before the adapter can be recognized so typing it is not identified when I type lsusb. I've attached two screen shots. Thanks in advance for your sage advice. Scott

Run menu>System>Pup-Sysinfo>Devices>USB devices>Summary

That should show the info about this WIFI adapter.

Post what it gives for info about the USB WIFI adapter.

I think I know a quick fix for you, but I need to know some specific info.
a new Raylink usb adapter
What model?
I can look up the info.

It's the first card listed. The windows 7 driver is RTL8192.us.sys. As always, thank you.

@ Scott99 :-

Have a look here:-

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=112987

After Bill (rcrsn51) withdrew his thread on the RTL8192 chipset, Ally (our Puppy archivist) helped me scour the archives to put together as complete a list of the various assorted 8192 drivers as I could manage. You can find 'em at the link in that post.

Do be aware that wireless drivers tend to be kernel-specific; you do need to obtain the one for your particular kernel. Bear that in mind when you're looking through the list. It's by no means exhaustive, but there's a fair selection to choose from...

Might be of some use.

Well, I am a little confused,
Xenialpup 7.5 already has a bunch of different rtl8192 stuff.
However, there are so many versions of rtl8192. it may not have the needed one.

The Linux driver package, you posted, says it is full of stuff for rtl8822.
That is already in Xenialpup 7.5

Could you check something.
menu>Setup>Internet Connection Wizard>Wired or wireless LAN>Network Wizard
In first window.
Nothing showing about this USB wireless adapter?

The Pup-Sysinfo shows it using the rt2800usb driver, which is suppose to be a kind of generic driver.

Could see if this tells us anything.
In a console type

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep 'firmware'

One of my cards utilize the rt2800usb driver along with "modinfo" listing rt2870.bin as the firmware it's accessing.

So basically when I'm running windows the modem works. When I boot to Xenialpup it does not even light up. The modem came with a disc which has drivers on it. I just don't know which one to install and how to install it. I did follow the link above, download and installed to pet files, but in the end I get the same result; zilch. Also, the card is not listed when I use the internet connection utility. Thanks, Scott

Nothing showing about this USB wireless adapter? I did this and the new modem was not listed.

Proven rtl8812au pets exist for Dpup Stretch 7.5, not Xenial Pup. Perhaps perdido can build you one..

What exactly did you download and install?
You need to give very specific details!
Specific name of what you downloaded.

Did you do this and get any info from it?
Could see if this tells us anything.
In a console type

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep 'firmware'
Press enter.

This device is not a Realtek rtl8192cu or a Ralink rt2800usb or a Realtek rtl8812au.

It appears to be a Realtek 8812bu/8822bu. This driver is not in the Xenialpup kernel and requires a custom build.

No. It's from https://github.com/brandon-bailey/rtl8822bu with a patch for the [0bda:b812] device.

The GitHub instructions require k4.7 but it compiled OK for me in Xenial.

None of my usb wireless cards are working

#17 Post by Scott99 »

Ok, so now I have a new problem. When I search for my wireless network it shows up but I can't maintain a connection. I have all three wireless tools that are included with Xenialpup 7.5. So I configure the modem, it appears to connect, but then no actual data is transmitted to or from my computer, or, the connection breaks. Rebooting doesn't help. I still have a great connection under windows 7. Thanks, Scott

Simply too many suppliers and not enough clients.
