Dual booting WindowsXP and Puppy

#1 Post by cwestie »

[(Linux) newbie alert!]
Got XP on first partition and Puppy Linux on the second. Followed all the (Excellent) instructions on http://ph-islands.net/pupinstall/ to install Puppy to a separate hard disk partition and received no errors, including the install of Grub.

Problem - PC still boots into XP, no sign of Grub or any choice of OS.

I can only get back into Puppy with the CD but I would like choose to run the HD install of Puppy at bootup.

Your help is much appreciated

Install Grub to MBR - this is advisable as you stored Puppy in its separate partition. Just a check: did you choose "superblock" when installing Grub?

Or you can make Puppy's partition the default boot partition by labelling it "boot" in cfdisk. No need to modify Grub in this case. Just open cfdisk in Puppy, make /dev/hda5 (assuming this is your Puppy partition) the "boot" partition, Write (save), and reboot.

There is a WinXP install page in that same site, which installs Puppy in the same partition as WinXP.

**Alert** If you run into problems, here are the known issues and solutions with Windows XP and MBR installations.

You could try to do a manual install of Grub by building a Grub floppy and configuring the menu.ls file.
There is plenty of info regarding Grub on the forum and the Wiki.
