That would be this post, and the subsequent very informative discussion:

Interesting stuff, but I don't think it's relevant to my problem. The stick in question happily boots Xenialpup 64 and Tahrpup. It's the Xenial 32 that it doesn't like.

Do you have any other USB drives plugged in when you try to boot Xenialpup 7.5?
If yes.
Only have the Xenialpup one plugged in.

No.
I do believe the ISO is dud. Now I am just waiting for somebody to try it for themselves.
Just to repeat; the same flash drive happily boots other varieties of Puppy in the same computers. I can't see any other possibility.

Hello, olddog and all.
I do have a somewhat similar problem getting puduan-7000a22 to boot from
any disk. It only boots from CD or DVD. This Puduan-7 and your Xenial-7
were "woofed" around the same period.
Could it have to do with the new Grub4Dos version 0.4.6-something with the
new 320Kb < gbldr >? That version is pretty fussy, IMO.
BFN.

Xenial 7.5 32-bit boots fine from a USB stick.
Maybe you are over complicating it, here is a simple way to do it from user rockedge
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=905364#905364
In the instructions you can substitute FAT32 / VFAT for EXT2 if you wish.

Hope you get it sorted Old Dog.
Incidentally whilst we are on this topic, I think Syslinux is in newer Puppies but possibly, Mtools is not?
After installing Mtools I managed to get a IDLINUX.SYS file over to usb stick,
but it now comes with an extra IDLINUX.C32 file. I don't want or need this (menu).
Anyone know how to just do a IDLINUX.SYS transfer that will boot?

May I ask if you have tried the ISO that is currently in the library? I am sure that earlier versions have worked, but has anybody tried the current one?
Well I have tried various different methods without success. In particular, on the same machine, and with the same USB stick, DD happily boots Tahr, but not Xenial 32. I have also tried Unetbootin, Etcher, and various other methods suggested above.

Just trying again with Etcher, this time with an ISO from NLUUG. However, I suspect it is the same file as the one on Ibiblio.
Using Etcher, or BalenaEtcher, I get the message:
"It looks like this is not a bootable image.
The image does not appear to contain a partition table, and might not be recognised or bootable by your device."
I am more than ever convinced that it is the ISO that is the problem. Other ISOs, like Xenial 64 and Tahr, don't prompt this message.

Just installed Slacko 6.3.2 on the same computer (Thinkpad T42 32bit) using the same flash card.
It's the ISO (xenialpup-7.5-uefi.iso) that's the problem.

I have now given up with this. Slacko is installed and working well.
Very many thanks to all those who made suggestions. If I had worlds enough and time I would persist, but I have already spent about 15 hours fruitlessly, and it's time to accept defeat and move on.

Just checked, the answer is no as the one at ibiblio.org has been updated in February this year.
I'm not going to try that ISO, there is a chance you discovered a problem there.... need someone else to download
the new version of xenialpup-7.5-uefi.iso and try that and see if that new version boots from USB
All I can suggest for now is verify the md5 of your ISO and wait for someone to download the current version at ibiblio
https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-xenial/32/ to see if you found a bug.
I don't have bandwidth right now to do that so maybe someone else can.

Thanks for coming back on this. I have reported that it's not working.

I don't think it's the ISO.
I just went to ibiblio via the link perdido gave in his latest post, grabbed the ISO dated 24 feb 2019, downloaded and verified the SHA256 and MD5 checksums.
Burned it to a CD, and booted up a LiveCD session just fine. Took a new 8 GB flash drive (Gorilla, USB 2.0, about 5 yrs old but still in the package), formatted it ext3 with GParted, set boot flag, then used Puppy Installer to install Xenial to the flash drive. Shutdown the LiveCD session, booted from the flash drive, and it came up just fine. Tried a few apps, everything looks perfectly normal.
Hardware: 2003 Compaq Presario laptop, 1.3 GHz Celeron M, 1 GB RAM.
