Anybody still use a serial mouse?

#1 Post by mavrothal »

Is anybody using puppylinux in a computer with serial mouse?
The very old mechanical ones connected at the 9-pin serial port?

Wow that's old! My two oldest laptops, running Puppy 4.1.2 and Wary 5.1 respectively, have the 9-pin port, but if I still have a serial mouse it's buried somewhere in the garage along with 5-pin AT keyboards and other such relics.

In the modern world probably no one.
However, in the third world countries, not sure.

I have this one, but no port for it in any of my computers.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

No, coz the port is being used by my 9600 baud modem :)

Joking aside, I do still use cli a lot though. tmux on local (London) end, ssh to hashbang.sh (New York), ssh from there also into sdf.org etc. mutt, cmus, mc, weechat ...etc. More fun, less ads.

I do, unfortunately, I just found out that serial mouse support has been removed from woofCE. :( I posted this on GitHub:
I still have a computer, with which I use a serial mouse. This computer is running dpup stretch.

I likely won't use any newer version of puppy on it but sometimes older versions of puppy are built with the latest woofCE.

With regards to serial mice not lasting long, I'll say that USB ports also don't last that long and this computer has a limited number of USB ports. Also I'm able to buy second hand serial mice from the goodwill. Puppy is ment to support older hardware. I think that this change is a mistake!

Wow I agree...serial mouse support should remain.......as one of Puppy's primary goals, is to run on old hardware.

maybe switching the kernels can extend using a serial mouse

I recall that when PCs with USB ports were first introduced into the working environment we only had serial mice as USB mice were very expensive.

The solution was an adapter for each PC which is still readily available.

No, by the time USB ports were introduced, the standard connector for mice was the PS/2. The adapters shown in your link are all PS/2 - USB converters. Check the link in the original post and you'll see that this thread is about the 9-pin, two-row, "D" shaped connector.

Hi 6502coder,

Thanks for the correction. It is the earlier RS232 connection that is the subject of this thread.
IIRC my very first 486 PC had one of those for the mouse together with a grand total of 4MB of RAM

Sorry for my error.
