Placing in this section so we can hear from interested parties/BK/&co. how the various Puppies perform on it, whether there'll be a new RPI-Pup of the various flavours, etc.

Nice might be an understatement. With USB 3.0 and up to 4GB of ram it is going to out perform my older computers. One reason I haven't been too stoked of previous raspberri pi devices is the lack of a fast system bus (e.g. USB 3.0 or SATA). With the introduction of USB 3.0 this changes and with up to 4GB of ram it will have more ram than many of my older machines.
Regarding system specs the one thing that I wonder about is power consumption. Since power is suppled via a USB C cable, will the CPU be power limited? By that I mean will the lack of power to the board be a bottle neck in speed. There is certainly plus in using low power consumption devices but perhaps downsides as well.

I don't think so. It sounds like the board itself would run on a lot less power, and only needs 3 amps to be able power multiple high powered usb devices.

Thanks @Flash
Who will be getting one? [lobster raises claw]
There are already shortages, with major UK suppliers saying they are not expecting sufficient of the 4gig model until September.
They are built in Wales by Sony ... surely they can ramp up production as required? Next shipments July 6 to coincide with official Debian Buster release ...
... I have a feeling Liz Upton might be using her marketing degree to hype the product (a trick another fruity company use - yes I do mean Appal [sic]) Ah well, her heart is in the right place ...
I had a cold shower and calmed down ...
I downloaded the latest Rasbian OS, which uses Debian Buster as its base. It can run on my out of date (pah!) rpi 3b+ and the new board when I get it ...
In other words it is Pi 4 ready ...
Is Puppi ready? Nope it will have to be compiled from the new mother board ...
It is time Puppi went Fruity!
What can I say guys. Puppi powers Raspberry?
Some tips for now and I will update the wiki shortly ...
http://wikka.puppylinux.com/Puppi
- Get an on/off switch, I found this useful
- Use a power supply with the higher ampage, it is important. they have to output or have adapters going to USB3
- A case is worth the money. I never made one, and rpi are robust ... even so.
- Checked out my local £ shop for micro-HDMI to HDMI - outa stock gonna need that and maybe a second monitor/TV
The documentation on the Pi is great. The Magpi mag is free to download. Bravo to all the Rpi team

My intentions are to build an open source time relay (to start with)
between the past and the future.
Spying on myself in the past is the most I can hope for ...

Who do I have to spy 🕵️♀️ on for the closed sauce version?
The Future is Open

I notice that many of the 'hobbyist' users are NOT putting their RPi s in neat little cases, so why the power problem? Look under the proverbial bed and find any old PSU which will provide 5V at ~15-30A, and drive a lot more kit, too - or a bank of RPi s.

Sage, if you don't provide a link to where you got that, I'm going to remove it.

Different source but same story.
https://techxplore.com/news/2019-06-hacker-raspberry-pi-restricted-nasa.html
Quote: | A hacker used a tiny Raspberry Pi computer to infiltrate NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory network, stealing sensitive data and forcing the temporary disconnection of space-flight systems, the agency has revealed.
The April 2018 attack went undetected for nearly a year, according to an audit report issued on June 18, and an investigation is still underway to find the culprit.
A Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized device sold for about $35 that plugs into home televisions and is used mainly to teach coding to children and promote computing in developing countries.
Prior to detection, the attacker was able to exfiltrate 23 files amounting to approximately 500 megabytes of data, the report from NASA's Office of inspector General said.
These included two restricted files from the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which handles the Curiosity Rover, and information relating to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations which restrict the export of US defense and military technologies. |

Another important change, is that they have removed (the exact phrase was removed, or disabled) hardware decoding for mpeg-2 and vc-1 on the RP4.
So this means you can no longer buy a mpeg-2 and vc-1 license key to enable hardware decoding, it has to be done through software.
This may be an issue for those who want to turn their RP into a media center.

Fellow heretics ... The Rpi 4 cases are sold out ... well the one I want is
We tried to order 2 Rpi 4 - the suppliers are only allowed to send one per order for now
... to perhaps stop freelance and other spy agencies buying hordes for their FUD endeavours ...
...
https://www.itpro.co.uk/hardware/33891/raspberry-pi-4-model-b-review-back-and-better-than-ever
I only have one HDMI monitor/tv, pretty sure it is not 4k
So the Pi is cool enough until the new heat-sinked ones are available ...
For now I don't require a 4k monitor ...
What I may do:
https://www.itpro.co.uk/mobile/21862/raspberry-pi-top-projects-to-try-yourself
- Use Raspbian Buster Lite as a bootstrap starting point
- download using apt-get, the basics of a Puppy/pupPi system
- await our smart dogs and their compiling skills ...
- build DIDO
http://adsy.me/hWfnTx2J4g
- have a lie down ...
Raspberry Pi
