I'm a regular puppy user since 4.3. I'm an avid early adopter of Studio1337.

My question is, how hard would it be, if possible, to set up a VPN among 4 or 5 laptops all running the same version of puppy, in Particular, Bionic Pup.

I'm wondering if I can find a way to avoid things like Dropbox, or Google Drive.

Your question is not so odd.
I have wondered about it since a long time also.

Maybe not exactly the same thing.
What would be the workload for the VPN server(s)?
And for the 'administrators' of this server(s)?
It probably depends on what you exactly mean by VPN,
what you expect it to do.

First time I was thinking of a supernode for n2n.
It can be used for calling with puppyphone/psip and is probably also used for BackSeatDriver. You can read about it in the newsletters.

There are also ssh servers on the internet.
I think they are more demanding to set up and to administrate.

If you want a replacement for Dropbox, Google Drive and the likes, it could be a ftp server.
Probably more demanding also. It needs storage space somewhere.
In fact, Smokey01 runs something like that: Smokey01.com.
But he has to let you in which is understandable because his resources are limited.
It is limited to devs and it is not for occasional use like Dropbox and Google Drive.

Is it possible to spread the effort?
Is there something possible with the developments in decentralized web?

It could be nice to have some trusted 'open' Puppy place.

Lots of questions. No answers. Sorry.

What are you trying to achieve?

If you're all wanting to have the same files available you can do a few things.

Dropbox & Google Drive are easy and reliable options. Google Drive is actually pretty good, 15gig for free.

Otherwise, setting up an FTP server could be done using the instructions here:

or, I've been playing around with a program called Syncthing lately, which works like P2P to sync all devices together. Works in Puppies, as well as windows, android etc.

I guess I misunderstood the question here. Embarassed

I was thinking of a public service for everyone to use over the internet.
With the additional requirement to spread the effort of providing this service accross 4 or 5 servers, taking turns.

If it is just to access data on several local machines, you actually just need a LAN (and some software like SAMBA)
which you have on all machines through the modem/router that manages your internet access as well.

@p310don
I like the links you gave, especially the first one.
I didn't know about the IRC server.

Thanks everyone!

I went with Syncthing. I have two installs of Bionic Pup sync'd on two different machines, it's perfect, but it didn't seem to want to run in Studio 1337, which I believe is based on Xenial Pup. Every time I ran the app, it gave me the puppy default application chooser, presumably for the browser, which I changed, but still got the same result.

Do those packages work in Xenial?
