NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti can't run X

#1 Post by abuian »

I can't get X to run on my son's custom-built gaming PC with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. I'm not worried about optimizing performance--I just want to be able to run EasyOS from a flash drive on the various computers in the house. (It works on other systems--just not this one.)

So far, I've tried several puppies that I had on disc--Precise 5.7, Slacko 5.7, Racy 5.5, and Fatdog 621. In every case, I simply got a blank screen when it tried to load X, or sometimes a short vertical line of letters. At least with EasyOS 2.0 and 2.1 I got to a command line with suggestions. In both versions it went through all of the normal startup procedures until it failed starting X. It counts to 20 waiting for video drivers, exits, and suggests running xorgwizard. The wizard gives me only one option—fully automatic detection. After that I’m back at the console without X running. When I type xwin the whole thing happens over again.

Any idea what might be causing X to fail? Isn't it supposed to default to nouveau?

The nvidia-driver package in non-free should work with it. There is no
support by free drivers, you would need at least a Linux 5.2 kernel
while Debian 10 comes with 4.19.

Non-free would be the nvidia drivers, its a chicken or the egg thing there, can't compile if system won't run, system won;t run unless compiled.

Only way to make it go would be a kernel switch to a 5.2 or later if the info in that link is correct.

EasyOS 2.1 has kernel 5.2.7. Maybe that’s why it gets a little further than the others?

Try using Bionicpup64 8.0
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pu ... 0-uefi.iso

By default it uses the Nouveau driver for Nvidia hardware.

The Nouveau driver will not provide full feature support, but maybe should provide basic graphics.

Actually I am wondering if it will work with that new a Nvidia hardware.

If it boots to a working desktop.
I can give you the info to get the latest Nvidia driver, that should give full support for this hardware.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thanks. Maybe the kernel version for EasyOS wasn't late enough? Anyway, it seems to work fine with nouveau in Bionicpup64. Which was a little surprising, since there's a lot of red in the NV160 column at https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/.

Though now I've swapped for the wifi not working--it was fine in EasyOS, but in Bionicpup64 none of the three tools finds it. It's the Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300, which should run with iwlwifi. I tried selecting the driver manually, and it still couldn't find the card. Maybe I need to download and install the firmware from intel?

See if adding this firmware will get the WIFI working.

The file goes into /lib/firmware

Need to download.
Unzip.
Before using this file.

I assume you are booting Bionicpup from a USB flash drive install and you have made a save.
So, reboot to get the new firmware into the save and hopefully it will now load the WIFI hardware.

Also, after getting a wifi connection.
On the desktop is Quickpet icon.
Run Quickpet>Info>Bionicpup updates

That will update Bionicpup 64 with all the latest bug fixes and program updates.

The Nouveau driver is not going to provide full feature support.
It is a generic Nvidia driver, so it does not have every possible feature. Only the main ones that all Nvidia hardware uses.

If you want to try installing and using the correct Nvidia driver for graphics.
Carefully follow this how to.

in bionicpup64 the nvidia410 driver in quickpet should support that card.
it supports my 1050ti

a few tips after installing it....

open menu>>desktop>>compton then click on manually edit and change line 33 from

Code: Select all

vsync = "drm";
to

Code: Select all

vsync = "none";
then restart compton

this turns off comptons vsync.

then turn on nvidias vsync

menu >> system >>nvidia settings
click on "X server display configuration"
then "advanced"
then tick both "compostion pipeline" boxes
then 'save to x configuration file' (ignore errors)

then hopefully enjoy your tear free desktop

in bionicpup64 the nvidia410 driver in quickpet should support that card.
Not according to the supported hardware specs.
It's highest support is Geforce 10 series.

This is a Geforce 16 card.

Nvidia says it needs the 430.40 driver.

abuian,

Install the 430 driver pet 666philb made.

Do not do the Nvidia run package procedure to get the driver installed.

The driver pet will be very easy to install and use.

666philb developed Bionicpup64 8.0. His stuff is right on good, best to use.

I’m not sure whether it worked. The package installed, and I rebooted. Nothing happens when I try to open nvidia settings. It did max out my save file. I don’t know if that would have affected the install. I didn’t expand it until after rebooting.

There may be something wrong with that 430 driver pet.
I am waiting for 666philb to get back to me about it.
It seems to be too small a pet.
Maybe missing something.

You may not have gotten the driver package totally installed if the save was too small.

Make the save 2 or 3 GB in size.
Use menu>Utility>Resize Personal Storage File

Use menu>Setup> Puppy Package Manager(PPM)>Uninstall
Remove the Nvidia driver install.
Reboot.
Try installing the Nvidia 430 pet again.

I missed this at first, after it went onto a second page. Long and short, I think you were right. I started a clean, larger save file (2GB, but 1GB would have worked) and tried everything again. (I did end up re-downloading the pet, so I'm not sure if there was ever anything wrong with it.) Now it seems to be working. Thanks to you both for the help!
