How to use wireless in Xenialpup? (Solved)

#1 Post by tem2 »

I'm running Puppy Linux from a usb drive.

I have a wireless connection that is detected when I run the SCAN in the Network Wizard

From that point, I'm not sure what to do.

What information do I need to post for assistance with this?

What commands do I need to run to get this information?

If your running frisbee it should find your wireless network then click on the connection and select connect a popup box should appear asking for "Please enter the public (Pre Shared) Key. Type your password and click "ok" that's all I do.

Network Managers

#5 Post by peterw »

Just adding other thoughts for anyone who comes across this post.
Puppy has 4 Network Managers (NM) which all work. If you tell us what Puppy you have and which NW you are using then giving you the right procedure is possible.
For instance, looking at Slacko it has 3 of the 4. They are Simple Network Setup, Frisbee and Network Wizard (NW). Different users prefer different ones. I still like the oldest which is NW and that is what I think you are attempting to use. Click on that and you see the screen showing your wlan or wlans. In my case I click on wlan0 and get a GUI with 4 buttons from which you choose "Wireless". Click on "Scan" and it will show the various available networks from which you choose yours. Select WPA2 (most likely that is what you have) and provide the key and then "Save" it and then click "Use this Profile". It will make connections and take you back to the Screen Where you have Wireless, Test Wireless, Auto DHCP and Static Buttons from whoch you now choose Auto DHCP and it will get settings from your Router. After that click "Done" and the following screens are easily understood.

Most of the other systems in Puppy do not allow this choice, but connect to strongest signal. NW is still the best connection method... if a free service is provided, you can choose that ( McD's or Dunkin Donuts, or the Pub. Lib., etc) instead of paying.

I'm confused. When I hard coded the static IP address for my network, the symbol in the system tray changed to a 'connected' icon. But it never worked. Does hard coding an IP address automatically change the icon?

I get a message that says: 'Default route set through 10.0.0.1' and then I click OK which pops up a window saying 'NETWORK CONFIGURATION OF wlan0 SUCCESSFUL!

Does this mean the interface should be working now? Because it doesn't.

A little bit of info...

I'm running Xenialpup

I booted with a usb drive on a notebook with NO WORKING HARD DRIVE

The static addresses I used are taken from another laptop connected to the same network, so I'm sure they are accurate.

Pick one of the network connection tools you want to use.
Then we can guide you on how to use it.
Each one is different on how to connect.
Simple Network Setup?
Frisbee?
Network Wizard?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

If you want to use a Static Address you have to get the details right. Best bet is to use Auto DHCP and then have a look at what you get by going back into it. Having done that you can alter just the IP Address and take note of the other details for later use. I expect that you shou;d have anaddress in the 192.168.x.xxx range with a gateway of 192.168.x.254 or 1.

I found some recurring log entries that show some errors. It looks like a driver issue. I also added some diagnostics from Frisbee at the bottom.

If this is a driver issue, is there a workaround?

If you are attempting to use the static IP addresses that are showing in another laptop on your network this will not work, because each static IP needs to be different.

As others have said, if you use Auto DHCP instead, this will assign a suitable LAN IP for you. Then you can take note of it and manually enter that one as your static IP afterwards. Otherwise you need to observe the ones that are already assigned on the network and make sure to use a different one from those that are available.

Thanks for the post. It wasn't working so I went back to DHCP. All of the diagnostics above are using DHCP.

Since you have been trying various ways of setting up the network and will have learnt much then it may be wise to start again for a fresh start. If you delete or rename the Save file on the USB then it will ask you is you want a Save File with which you have a fresh start and you can set up the Wifi again.

I think this is a driver issue. I've tried various other distros to see if they would work with this notebook, but none of them would even boot up. I'm guessing they need a hard drive. For whatever reason, Xenialpup runs ok without a hard drive.

Is there a way to display the network specs for this notebook via Xenialpup?

Is the data above enough information to determine the specific problem and solution?

(I would replace the hard drive, but its part of the motherboard and would cost too much.)

Thanks for the help!

menu>System>Pup-Sysinfo>Devices>Network

Post what it shows for information.

This should be the info on the network devices in this computer.

We only know what you tell us.
Frisbee
When using Frisbee.
In the wireless networks tab
Do you get multiple detected devices?
(This is the WFI router that provides your WIFI signal).
If yes.
Are you sure you are selecting to use your WIFI hardware?

It will pickup other WIFI signals in your area and also list them.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I'm going to close this post. I've decided to get another notebook with a good hard drive. Thanks very much for all of your support.

Is there anything I have to do to mark this thread closed?

Hello tem2,
Seems to have been some miscomminication in this topic.
The only thing the people that were trying to help were asking really is where the heck were you pulling the info from that you have posted in the thread.

Its not a driver issue because you can see the adapter and networks so the wireless adapter is working.

You really have not said "when I tried frisbee this is what it does"
or "when I tried simple network setup this is what it does"
or "these logs are from"
You are so close to being connected you should be able to smell it, don't give up now.

When you run frisbee there should be at least one wireless network showing if frisbee is seeing the networks

Do you see any networks in frisbee?
This pic has my network underlined as example.
