I downloaded and installed xvidcap 1.17 and it ran also installed Fredx181's little static Mplayer to /usr/bin which it seems to work well with..

A discovery for you. I know it's a 'whopper', but if anybody playing around with the 'Phoenix' really has to have the ultimate PDF reader, Adobe's final Linux version 9 of Adobe Reader installs & runs a treat.

And I thought I'd 'modernise' the Phoenix somewhat. Upgrade the desktop background to match the rest of the kennels.....except I've left it largely black & white to emphasise that this is an older Pup:-

It suddenly occurred to me; it's one of those 'standard' items that I tend to install in most Pups when I set them up. Surprisingly, it's another one that just seems to run everywhere; I've yet to find a Pup it won't run in. A 4-series is the oldest I've tried it in thus far, I will admit....

Admittedly, it is several years old now, but with the majority of Linux dependencies being backward-compatible. and Adobe Reader being pretty much a self-contained item, with all its own, specialised libs in its own directory, well.......it was definitely worth a try.

And it paid off.

I normally steer clear of 'download sites' like the plague (I even did that in my XP days), but this was sourced from Softpedia, of all places. They have quite a selection of Linux software.....and this one (touch wood!) has never been any bother at all. (You've always had to source Adobe stuff direct from Adobe themselves, or sites like Softpedia, MajorGeeks, etc; to the best of my knowledge, I've never seen any of their material in any package manager repositories).

I actually had to build these from the .rpm package, rather than the .deb; UExtract complained that the .deb package was 'malformed', and refused to even look at it. The .rpm package, on the other hand, extracted cleanly. At the end of the day, the actual contents are identical; .deb & .rpm are simply different packaging formats, when it boils down to it.

But, there you go. Anyway; another one for the 'collection', I think....

Re: Adobe Reader 9. Don't forget, with this one you've got the option of setting things up so that clicking on a PDF in the browser will automatically open Reader 9 up with that PDF already loaded and showing.

Go into /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser. There's a script to run, which installs the browser plug-in to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. There's also a 'How-to' .text file, in case you get stuck.

Do be aware; although this is an executable script, if you simply click-to-run, all you'll see is the CPU spooling up to 50%, sitting there, and apparently not doing anything. That's because (and I've just reminded myself of this fact!) the script actually needs running through the terminal.....because you have a couple of choices to make. And if you don't run in the terminal, you don't see them..!

You should end up with nppdf.so, as shown below:-

This only applies to Gecko-based browsers (i.e., Mozilla-based ones). Doesn't work with the Chromium 'clones'.

As a side note Phoenix has unetbootin and libs - so very useful for using with iso's

From terminal type unetbootin installtype=USB targetdrive=/dev/sdb1 (or whatever your flashdrive identifies as).

Thank YOU for resurrecting the 'Phoenix' and putting it all together..!

I've had a lot of fun with this one, and learnt some new 'tricks' along the way, thanks to watchdog's 'chroot jail' stuff. I think I now see what all the fuss was with Puppy 4.3.1; it's still very useable, on the whole - external drive issues notwithstanding, though that could be peculiar to my hardware; I can't say.

Evening, darry/all.

Revisiting this thread after a hiatus of a couple of months. As a follow-up to the question I posed in this post about the Phoenix's display appearing far too bright & 'washed-out' looking on ye elderly Compaq tower, I'm pleased to be able to report a solution.

As a development on the thread I started about a suitable screen brightness control for desktop computers, Fred started investigating the possibility of incorporating a 'lightweight' CLI version of RedShift into a fully-automated, combination brightness/tint control, along with its own automatic geo-location. These were built as a 'generic' 32-bit version, a 'generic' 64-bit version, and a variant that was specially-built for Wary/Racy. They're currently up to version 3; I can't believe I never thought to give these a try.

I started off with the Wary/Racy build.....and didn't need to look any further. It may, perhaps, be the particular combination of the Phoenix's X-server stuff and my specific graphics hardware - this may not pose a problem for anybody else - but the Wary/Racy build has completely cured the issue for me.

Fred says that the Wary variant was intended for older Puppies with a far more minimal Xorg setup - which includes 431, I guess. They're packaged as a self-extracting script; just d/l the Wary variant, untar it with UExtract, then stick the resulting script into /root/Startup, as is (it's only just over 250 kb, total). It unpacks itself into /tmp at boot, and runs from there for the duration of the session.

It creates a hidden .rshift directory in /root, where all the settings & automatic geo-location stuff resides, so will remember your settings from one session to the next.

Thoroughly recommended if you've got the same issue as me.....and recommended anyway, since the reddish night-time 'tint' it gives is far more restful on the eyes than the harsh, blue-white light that most monitors produce. Doesn't interfere with your beauty sleep, either!

Bumping this several months old thread to say a big "Thank You" to Darry19662018 (and all the other contributors). Phoenix 4.31 (2019) v3 has rescued a couple of old computers of mine. Mostly my old 2005 laptop (HP Pavilion ZE4300), and my 2004 Dell Optiplex 270. These two contraptions have refused to work well with almost everything! Running smoothly now with Phoenix.

I seem to prefer running these older contraptions more than my newer stuff (just more fun, I guess.)
